#1 redwulfe Jun 26, 2008 11:07:29	I was looking at the article index to see what ma be coming in Dragon 346 nd saw that they are writing a Dark Sun article. Does anyone know what the y may potentially put in the article on dark sun for dragon magazine? Tim
#2 glak2 Jun 26, 2008 11:26:42	I can think of two reasons: 1) Dark Sun was a extremely flavorful world and thus an extremely valuable intellectual property. This might be their first step towards monetizing it. 2) A bunch of idiots run the D&D department over at WotC and this is their attempt at a putting a wooden stake through our beloved world in order to get a quick article out of it (see "Paizo") I'm guessing that they'll do a combination of 1 + 2
#3 redwulfe Jun 26, 2008 12:02:34	I hoping it is more of one given that the concept for game worlds is the points of light I think dark sun is on the extreme end of that scale. if you have forgotten realms on one end and Ebboron in the middle giving an example of the other end seems logical. Also they did say that they would be producing one campaign world per year and that they would bring back some older campaigns even if it is only for one book. Jumps of logic and hopes and dreams may be the best way to title this but, If they do Forgotten realms this year to kick off the living campaign the next world would Ebboron. Since it is very likely that Psions will be in the second or third PHB then a world that is based on Psions and is on the other end of the points of light campaign spectrum could be in order. The dark sun world was popular. I can think of only one other game world that would fit this criteria and it does not have psions, that would be Ravenloft. Psions will more than likely be in PHB II due to the need for them in Ebboron. Need may be a strong word but it would be nice to have them for the campaign. That means that Ravenloft or Darksun could be the two campaigns in contention for the third released campaign world. Now we have an article in the first 4th ed dragon on Darksun, which brings to mind two outcomes given the previous is true. That they are giving us the info because they are producing Ravenloft or they are giving us the article to prime us up for an upcoming release. Now I have to throw in these thoughts as well. Ravenloft is more marketable as a licensed product and Darksun is not. Given that a company wishes to make money licensing out Ravenloft and producing Darksun as a single book and then letting the fans take it from there seems to be the better choice monetarily. My prediction or at least what I would like to see, is that we will get Psions in the next PHB or the one after that. That Darksun will be the third champaign world to et a book and it will only be a one or two book release in 2010. Ravenloft and Dragonlance will be licensed for development with other companies. #4 jaid Jun 26, 2008 12:33:04	if i was going to guess the next most likely world to be released, i would say either dragonlance or greyhawk. dragonlance because they had a successful 3rd edition product by a third party licensee, and greyhawk because of living greyhawk. both have evidence that they could make money. dark sun is probably after those two, in my personal opinion... none of the other settings got as far with their fan conversions, which likely indicates more fans of the setting. maybe planescape will beat it out though... hard to say.
#5 nymrohd Jun 26, 2008 12:52:52	No setting was more heavily invested on its story and mood than planescape. I think it could be very well translated into 4E if they so chose but lacking the setting itself it could end up badly. Still Planescape is infinitely maleable and one could retrofit it into the current cosmology. You'd need a great team to do so successfully though . . . Dragonlance was going great in 3.5. Nice setting, quite PoL, and as long as they don't find it necessary to force yet another cataclysm on it, it can really be a great place for 4E. I'd be psyched to see Greyhawk actually get a campaign setting book. The Gazeteer was nice but I think we would all like something bigger. As for Dark Sun, I always thought it had one of the biggest internet fan communities among settings, at least judging by all polls at EnWorld (were it would often beat Dragonlance and Greyhawk in popularity by a fair margin on well attended polls). What I find exciting is the prospect that each Dragon may well feature an article about one of the old worlds
#6 redwulfe Jun 26, 2008 23:50:07	I agree Dragonlance is a good IP but it will do better for the company to allow this one to go to a license rather than develop in house. it takes less resources on the company they can then focus on other avenues of revenue and still make money on the property. so I don't feel that in house production on this or Ravenloft would be something they would do. Greyhawk's living campaign is in its last weeks before living forgotten realms is going to be up and running. I don't think they will produce anything for this though they never really put out allot of material on it comparatively in the first place. Planscape will get some press in the future though, they have already mentioned the lady of pain and Sigil in the 4th ed books and it is a popular setting. I don't think it is going to come out until later though due to the popularity of the polls going to Darksun and the fact that Darksun makes since for the PoL line theory were Planscape is more of something else all together. #7 Pennarin Jul 01, 2008 16:05:50	WotC would release DS only after or in conjunction with the release of the 4E Psion class and Psionic power source. That's probably PH2 or PH3. Long time to wait.
