Dark Sun = Deadlier 4e D&D?

I'm one of those who loves very challenging encounters and dangerous world environments, so I'm curious if Dark Sun still retains that flavor of a much more deadly campaign world?

In the past, that's exactly how it was advertised: death from both monsters and the harsh natural environment was more common, and that's why characters started with higher ability scores and with a few more levels, instead of the typical level 1 and 4d6 & drop one die start.

Again, really curious if the flavor of Dark Sun continues to truly be a "deadlier" setting in 4e.  D&D 4e isn't nearly as deadly as prior editions - characters drop unconscious as often or more, but don't actually die much at all - so I'm wondering how Dark Sun 4e is different from typical 4e as well.  Or if it's really mostly hype, and mostly flavor and atmosphere over actual increased deadliness.

Thanks!

It's probably going to end up resulting in how the DM wants to run the Dark Sun setting for their players.  I'm all for hard, brutal D&D.  Dark Sun is a brutal setting, that's how it should be.

Makes it more rewarding to roleplaying and adventure and survive within the world of Athas!

If the arenas that were run at GenCon are any indication (and after looking through the Creature Catalog they are), then you'll have your brutal Dark Sun. It has been a long time since I felt so close to dying (I've been playing 4e since its release). I thin they did a good job of capturing the feel of the world without having to start at higher level or bumping up ability scores.

Good to know!  I was wondering how the GenCon events turned out.

(heh)

You know ... the Raise Dead ritual is in PHB1, right ??

It is possible to ditch the Wishlist treasure set-up,
and replace it with unhelpful treasure to the PCs - that the monsters can use very well.
The monsters can gain surprise.
The monsters can use lots of rituals on the PCs.
etc ...

It will be in my 4e Dark Sun.  My players are actually looking forward to some PC churn.  Let the bloody red sun rise!
