I have seen alot of threads about how to convert stuff and how it wont work etc.

HOWEVER, I am looking to start a DS campaign in the next few months. I want to use 4e. I know I will not get everything but I want to TRY.

I accept unto myself as DM to balance certain classes with RP, ie Wizards.

What ideas/changes/additions/removals might you suggest to get CLOSE to the idea/feel of DS in 4e?

Classes:
Warlocks out
Paladins... Reworked/themed, might make decent Templars.
Wizards need SOMETHING, I think they need a power boost to account for the penalties in the campaign.
Swordmage out.
Cleric, needs rework to account for the 4 elements. Might just be changing the Channel Divinities, and the damage types of their powers.
Psions? Well I will simply not allowing players to choose one as I don't have the time to wait. I will give them all Wild Talent like feats when I can and allow any who want to remake/change a character a chance to do so when psionics is out.

Metal:
Armor - considering leaving the stats the same but add something to make heavy armor difficult to use in the heat, but concerned about balance.
Also thinking of just making "master work" armor metal, where proper.

Weapons - I want to include this. I want metal weapons to be COOL. The easiest thing I can think of (and doesn't change balance) is put a cap on the enchantment level of items that are not metal. No enchantments above level 6 (or what ever the level is for basic +2)

Water and Survival
There really are not many if any rules for this. I am considering ignoring food, as its more the water that makes Athas truly brutal.
Does anyone know any survival type stuff for 4e? I don't mind adding another skill(s) as needed.

Any other major areas I need to change to help get the feel? Remember I am not expecting or trying to get exact.

He's asking for any suggestions to help him make a dirty-quick conversion. Since we seem to be filled to overflow with opinions, we ought to be able to provide him our personal theories on the matter?

I'll give you what I have when back home. I have several monster and generic NPCs to provide. Got email?

Exactly, there are so many posts on here talking about what we can't do or how horrible things are, no one talks about what we CAN do.

Will PM you my email.

With wizards I just incorporated it into my timeline jump. Preservers are the base wizard and are no longer killed on sight. There were hints of this in the revised boxed set in Gulg for example.

I would let the Swordmage in as it makes an OK Fighter/Wizard from previous editions. Anyone using the arcane power source however could be a defiler not just wizards.
