Way I figure and do my art, the sun's covered in a dark crust, like coal or lava, with white hot cracks
but, the Sun is ENORMOUS and it's surrounded by a huge chromosphere heated enormously hot, so it's bright, which is what I try and do in my art
and thus makes sense, the sun is dark, but still gives off huge amoutn of heat/light ;)

our sun is only about the size of your little finger nail, by the way, at arms length, by comparison Athas' Sun is more like a man's chest in width.
i.e. it'a a red giant

If that's the case with the Dark Sun being a Red Giant, I think the Sorcerer Kings should develop interstellar travel soon before it shrinks and cools to become a White Dwarf or worse yet...super nova.

By soon you mean in a few million years? If only I could get a campaign to last that long...Cool

I'm not entirely certain they would even be aware of such a thing. Of course, I believe the blame for the condition the Sun is in, is placed squarely on Rajaat, who decided to meddle in things that he may have not fully understood (the Pristine Tower & the Dark Lens), when he made his Champions, and tapped into the energy of the Sun directly, resulting in it getting bigger and darker when used (basically, like every time he made a Champion, he aged the Sun a few million years or more). Fortunately he didn't get to completely drain the Sun before he was stopped.

Oh, and I tend to think of it more as a Red Supergiant than a mere Red Giant. I also tend o think that it is nearing supernova stage, and the world only has a few thousand years (at most) left before everything is destroyed.

In my games, Athasian history is totally different

the mind flayers gave creatures on the surface pisonics, so they could harvest a secret fraction of it over millenia
they used this energy in their attempt to put out the Sun, so they could rule the surface
they screwed up, Sun went into a nova phase...
gods intervened before it actually blew, leavign it as a red giant
but the havoc from all that killed gods/sealed Astral Plane off etc
wrecked the Underdark, oceans drained through into it
left the world baking
and the Sun is not just a red giant,it's warped, mutating things exposed to it, etc

also , Athas is incredibly ancient.

my athas is Clarke Asthon Smith + RObert E Howard + Fallout, etc hehe

Rajaat wanted to give Athas back to the halflings and recreate the Blue Age. He probably knew how to make the sun blue again.

Ahh, if you don't believe that Rajaat had a lot of bluster in his so-called promises. I tend to think he didn't really know everything that he was doing, and winging it a lot, and messed things up.

Imagine if some defilers/sorcerer kings realised this and used planar gates to conquer an another world. Nice epic campaign Wink

A poster fit for a king.
Or in this case: the Troll Scorcher, 4th champion of Rajaat, Lion of Urik, King of Athas.

Other considerations: "Trolls?", "Genocidal Troll-Scorcher", "Please, feed the trolls. Fatten them up for Hamanu.", or "He eats trolls alive."

The Kalak pic sure is different than the Verdant Passage description. Oh, well.

Last night I found myself thinking of punchlines for some reason. I was imagining an old 'kreen and a new one and the old one asking the new what happened to its abdomen. Then I was picturing the picture in the article previews that shows a dragon (very non-Athasian dragon, sadly) and the PCs in the image saying, "don't worry, there are no dragons on Athas, just one, that's an illusion..."
#32

Pennarin

Jul 13, 2010 14:16:59
That "dragon" might be a wyvern, as it has no arms and appears small enough.

Like Alphastream1 mentionned, the Death of Kalak pic doesn't match the novel's description, or even what City-State of Tyr says the configuration of the arena looks like. There's no wood, it's all stone, and would need to be to hold tens of thousands of citizens. The royal booth is also higher, and would allow you to sit (hey, royalty needs to sit too), probably with a retinue and guards. Right now it's on the ground, made of wood, wholly unprotected. In that position a lowly slave gladiator could get in reach to throw sand at the king. Very weird indeed.

Rather than repost the Rikus and Kalak pic multiple times...

I am your king!
Well, I didn't vote for you.

Dark Sun
On Athas, this is how you play "catch"

Guard with the spear:
"... Does this mean I get tomorrow off?"

Dude in green headdress:
"Wow, where did those wooden stands come from?"

Mul waiters
Be sure to order your steak well done, never bloody.

Mul waiters
Always make sure someone gets a tip.

Bad Timing
Kalak: "Attention slaves! Today you are fr- UGH!"

Dark Sun
Where wooden spears are good enough to take off a head without actually hitting it.

Killed by slaves?
No, there must have been a grassy gnoll on a nearby hill with a crossbow.

Can't Nibenay and Lalali-Puy just be different even if Nibenay is way way cooler?
Can't 1991 and 2010 Dark Suns just be different settings rather than a validation of your experience in second edition?
Can't we just swear truce until the books come out THEN rip the designers a new one?

They’ve been called the Enders of Worlds, and their penchant for crushing totalitarianism is as much a trademark as their unparalleled epic sorcery.  Yet these enders of time began with very humble origins.  The Sorcerer Kings, formerly known as Rajaat’s Chosen, began their careers as a simple traveling magic show.  Their popularity however would launch the Chosen on a blood soaked magical highway to hell leading all the way to world domination.

This is a look back at the Sorcerer Kings, Behind the Magic.

860f0b63be3fb1dcbc2bf925ddcff5d7.jpg?v=50246

“It’s sorcery man, the most horrifying defilement of the natural order available to conscious thought.  It was, you know, rib crunching, skull crushing, sort of soul blistering defiling magic, brother.”

-Gurk Claytooth – Templar, Magic Enthusiast

“The effect he [Rajaat] would have on some of these audiences.  How do we build a prison and keep someone like that in it you know?”

-The Dragon Formerly Known as Borys

“We drank it all up, man, life, the universe everything you know, we drank it like a brother on the edge of the desert you know, man?  We killed everyone, we woke up, and killed some more.”

-Kalak

To be continued....join in people!

re: WasteWalker

I saw a picture in A Sampling of Penn Central that would work even better here.  According to the caption, this stretch of track had not been properly maintained for 25+ years.  The dilapidated right-of-way, not-parallel rails, rotting ties, missing ballast (the rocks), bushes overgrown everywhere, &c all just scream out Dark Sun.  If only there wasn't so MUCH shrubbery; it's probably the most verdant area on Athas.

I'm preparing to run a modified version of Fury of the Wastewalker for some friends. I've been slowly introducing them to elements of Dark Sun. This is inspired by Bly2729's How to speak Athasian motivtional posters.
