It occurs to me that the only Psionic class Dark Sun really needs is the Psionicist. If, so far, both FRPG and EPG have one new character class anyway, couldn't a DSPG just introduce the Psion(icist) as the first Psionic class?

I really don't see why classic Dark Sun is dependent on a variety of Psionic classes. Wild talents could easily be represented by multiclass feats, either into the Psion class itself, or like the spell scar.

DS lore says there are many schools of thoughts on how to manipulate the Will or the Way, and this leads to many different psionic users. 3e was more in synch with this than 2e ever was, due to various psionic classes and prestige classes being introduced, and 4e will be even more with its many psionic classes all with now unique powers. Paragon paths will replace prestige classes in providing variations based on themes.

Variety in classes is a boon, really, not a requirement to validate the setting. The setting can work with or without this variety. A chance convergence of lore and rules, when it happens, should be celebrated.

You must remember, that psionic variety on Athas is akin to the variety of all other forms of the supernatural combined in traditional settings. Psionic characters outnumber the whole of divine (which is actually replaced with elemental), arcane, and primal characters combined. Thus, having, for all intents and purposes, the immense bulk of casters you ever see in the game world be exactly the same class, would be incredibly boring.

Just imagine, for example if in the Forgotten Realms 10% of the casters were divine, 10% were primal, and the other 90% were Wizards. Not arcane casters, but just Wizards. Gah! How incredibly dull.

So, dependent on? Perhaps not. Vastly improved with a full selection of psionic classes? Yes.
