Dark Sun Questions

Hi!

I'm starting a Dark Sun campaign soon, and I have a few doubts that I’d like to present to the forums wisdom:

1 - Survival days; I understand what they represent and how they work. My question here is if trail rations do exist in Athas, and how do they work with Survival Days.

Does the standard 10 days trail rations from the PHB represent a day worth of food in Survival days? Or some other measurement is applied?

2 - Do adventurer kit's (with all the standard equipment) exist in standard Dark Sun campaigns?

3 - Are the roads in Athas paved? If so, why don’t they "disappear" in the constant “sand movements” around Athas?

Thanks

Great questions.

1) We play that trail rations do not apply, Survival Days replace them.  One day of trail rations is one day of food, but Survival Days are more than that, they include water, some clothing (hat, veil, whatever) , water, and salves.

Now an adventurer could just buy food, but he might have problems of sunburn and water shortage.  So bascially characters just buy Survival Days.

2)  It's up to you.  In my game Adventurers kits come with...for 15gp (cp in my game):

  1. Backpack

  2. Bedroll

  3. Fire Kit (not flint and steel, this is a bow or hand drill kit)  Probably a hand drill

  4. Pouch

  5. 1 Survival Day

  6. Rope

  7. 2 Torches (No Sunrods in my game)

  8. Waterskin

  9. Filter Mask

3) In general, no they're not paved.  In classic Dark Sun only the road that lead from Gulg into the Estaury of the Forked Tongue (People's Road?) was paved.  The rest are just hardpacked dirt.

It would make no difference if the road were paved or not as to whether they were covered in sand, however; I would say that there are marker's or cairns (large piles of rocks) to mark the roads along all of the major trade routes, especially in the Great Alluvial Sand Wastes.

1: Its ofcourse up to the individual GM in the end, but yeah, rations do exist but dont count as survival days. Survival days consists of both food and water (and usually some other nifty things like lotions), Rations are made up only of food. There are rules in the Dark Sun campaign guide to create Survival days by combining food (like rations) with sources fo water.

2: Again up to the individual GM I guess, I allowed standard adventurers kits except I made my players switch out the sunrods to torches and the Flint and steel to a Fire Kit (detailed in the Dark Sun Campaign Guide)
