Even though my group has already started playiong 4th ed, we wanted to give a try to Dark Sun in 3.5 rules as soon as my current Eberron campaign finishes.

I know there is a Dragon/Dungeon version of Dark Sun, which I have and I also have the updated version of the rules from athas.org.

I actually have 2 questions for those of you who have played DS on 3rd ed rules.

1. What is the appropiate level to start with?
In athas.org, the thri-kreen and half-giant start with 2 monster lvls and +1 lvl adj, so i asume lvl 3 should be the starting point as the 2nd ed rules of old. But I think that in dragon magazine, the kreen was at +2 lvl adj, which means lvl 4. What do you guys think?

2. I remember reading back in the day, that starting characters from DS had a some choice of psionic powers. Not that they had to select any important thing or ability or class, they just knew it cuz athas is a cruel world and everyone shoud have that advantage.
While reading through both sources (magazine and athas.org), I haventfound a refeernce to that. Should I make all my characters spend their 1st feat on wild talent feat? shoud I just give em the feat for free? something in between? or none of that and should I allow my players to decide if they want psionics or not?

Thanks for any feedback you might have for this. Sorry if i bring 3.5 questions, but since 4th doesnt have psionics, I think this is a good idea to revive an old setting that almost none of my players know about.

Thanks again.

Hey there Sixaola. I'm currently gearing up for my fourth campaign with DS3e, so hopefully I can help out a little

The races in the Dragon conversion are all slightly more powerful than the baseline in the PHB and athas.org's conversion, so they tend to have +1 LA higher than elsewhere. My preference is to use the athas.org version of the races, mainly because it allows you to start half-giants and thri-kreen at 3rd level (albeit with no class levels). I'd say it depends on what your other races are - it probably makes sense to keep all of your races from the same version and not to mix and match, just to keep the level adjustments in line with each other.

2. I remember reading back in the day, that starting characters from DS had a some choice of psionic powers. Not that they had to select any important thing or ability or class, they just knew it cuz athas is a cruel world and everyone shoud have that advantage.

To give them actual powers, you want the Hidden Talent feat (Expanded Psionics Handbook p 67), as Wild Talent only gives power points, not actual powers. That's the approach that athas.org takes, although taking the feat is optional in that version. Dragon magazine gives all the races bonus power points (about the same value as the Wild Talent feat).

My personal preference would be to let the players choose. If some players don't want psionic powers and your force them to have them, they'll likely just ignore them anyway. That said, some DMs on these boards have had great success with giving every character a free Hidden Talent feat or the like, so talk to your players and see what they like. You could take the approach that the Dragon magazine conversion took and give each character some free power points (like Wild Talent). Then the characters could use those for psionic powers, or use them with psionic feats if they don't have any powers. They wouldn't be forced into any choices they didn't want.

Thanks for any feedback you might have for this. Sorry if i bring 3.5 questions, but since 4th doesnt have psionics, I think this is a good idea to revive an old setting that almost none of my players know about.

No worries . You might also want to check out the Arena (athas.org's forum) - a lot of the regular DS posters are over there since the merger of the boards here at WotC:

Thanks a lot for the info, it has been really helpful.

I tried visiting the Athas.org forum, but I didnt find my way in there. After a few minutes, I decided to come here.

When I figure out how to post there, you will see me more often.

Actually, we released new versions of several chapters of DS 3 today and a brand new chapter on the city-states of Athas. One of the changes is that half-giants and thri-kreen no longer have hit dice. More information at the Arena.

thanks a lot.

This update seems awesome. I am already excited about our upcoming campaign.

On the other hand, I havent discovered how to post threads and replies on athas.org forums.
