Not to get any hopes up or down depending on peeps. But I've been curious if the Darksun Campaign setting was going to come back. Now before you say no definitely not hear me out on this.

There's already been stated that another campaign setting is being worked on...no titles or names were given.

Secondly why all of a sudden a decade after the first books were out are they re-releasing the novels? It just makes me wonder that if the rerelease of the novels may be a precursor to the campaign making it back.

Personally I miss this blazing planet of destruction. Or maybe they'll make a planet similarly effective where it's the complete opposite...It's mostly Ice. nahhh...anyhoo. Just shooting the breeze and trying to make conversation.

I know I certainly would be very happy if they did a remake of the scorched planet Athas.

Some of the most fun games I ever played in where in the darksun setting, just something about the very brutal setting with a focus on survival really spoke to me

I just wish we could get some info on how they were going to redo it. How would they introduce 4E mechanics into the world? How will the game handle such things as defilers? What kind of changes to the setting will occur for the sake of the game (and if they do change things, it brings up so many more questions... what does the Feywild look like for a desert planet?)?

Personally (though many may disagree), I'm kinda hoping for a complete world reset. I'd rather they start from scratch in a empty slate of history, than try some cataclysm to get things going. Darksun is a world already ravaged by cataclysm, there's little more you can do to it without ending all life.

There has certainly been plenty of rumblings in the community to warrant some speculation of it being the next setting.

A ice/winter world setting I wouldn't mind either. *Shifty eyes* Not because my current setting is like that, heavens no, what are you talking about *shifty eyes*

Stuck playing in the Fun Is Forgotten Realms, bet your players all want a cloak of survival eh?

Well currently it is still a urban campaign in one of the cities that pocket the landscape. Though eventually they will be tracking out into the endless winter environment.

It also in the campaign probably wouldn't be a "cloak of survival". It more likely be some manner of hazard protection gear (which could have a cloak as part of it). With perhaps a spirit trapped within that sheds away coldness from the wearer.

This setting is one that combines essentially Cyberpunk with Fantasy in a setting covered in a endless winter with Spirits everywhere and interacting with almost everything including the technology.

For instance there is "Spirit Hacking" where you use electronic interfaces to wireless transmit your spirit into another person and hijack their body (essentially the same concept as Ghost Hacking in Ghost in The Shell). You also got full cyborgs whose body is made functional by having the Spirit of a person transmitted into the body and thus allows it to move, etc. It be lifeless without it. This goes with stuff like mecha as well.

I just wish we could get some info on how they were going to redo it.

If they decide to release Dark Sun, we will get some info on how they are going to redo it.
  • The setting book will directly provide the changes.
  • Bill's Ampersand article will brag about it.
  • Designer articles will explain it.
  • Dragon articles will preview it.
  • Dungeon adventures will demonstrate it.
We've had "some info" on every product released thus far. A Dark Sun setting book would be no different.

Sounds cool, only Cyber Punk type stuff I ever played was Shadowrun, great game but the art work for the Dwarves was a little on the fugly side.

Love the winter Stillsuit idea by the way, good stuff and good gaming.

Yeah, I'm hoping that Dark Sun is the campaign setting of 2010, to tie in with Psionics hopefully being released in the PHB III.

…Though the Divine power source could be tricky.

This weekend I was talking with a gamer friend who, while "hardcore," by no means stays current on hobby news. When I mentioned WotC was going to release an unspecified setting, the first thing she asked was, "Is it Darksun?" No connection to all the boards chatter, and that was the first thing she thought of. I took it as kind of prophetic.

Ill say Im flat out working on this kind of world. Though I am shamelessly borrowing ideas from dune, darksun, frostburn, and the Clan of the Cave Bear series of books. I already have halflings riding around on giant Ice Worms on the high tundra, Elves riding around on Caribu in the frozen forest (yes I kinda got the idea from princess monoke) Eladrin living in a city of solid Ice where they use magic of light and sunbeams to heat things up, and ice magic to keep it solid. Tieflings making cities near volcanoes and channeling lava for their needs. Its actually shaping up to be an interesting world.

Im also kinda hoping for Darksun, but I would not mind if they did a completley new never before seen world either.

Just FYI, Darksun and Spelljammer are definitely getting redone. They already had a lot of work done on those settings as of the GAMA trade show last year.

Darksun for sure, but spelljammer? Can't all the concepts of spelljammer be done with the 4e MoTP?

If you check the Other Published Worlds forum, the Dark Sun board is by far the most alive. This on its own isn't evidence of what will be published this year, but it does give an indication of DS's popularity.

Doing Dark Sun in 2010 would give the impression of WotC being bold and forward-looking. Doing Dragonlance or Greyhawk would feel conservative and hesitant.

Check out Dragon 364 (the first dragon for 4th ed). It has a section regarding hazards in dark sun.

I would not be surprised by dark sun in the not too distant future (2010 or 2011)

Likelihood of 4e Dark Sun: High.

That said, I personally don't care. I didn't like the setting ... too dismal and dreary, and I hated what they did with magic.

I would definitely like to see a new Dark Sun setting get released.

I would personally prefer to see Dragonlance get handed back over to Sovereign Press, so WotC can focus on getting a few new or underused (like Dark Sun) settings out instead of plowing through the 'required' stuff that's been around forever.

It's short for binshonin (or is it bishojo? I can't remember), but it basically means a very good looking person. Or a man that looks very feminine.

On the darksun note I would be ecstatic if dark sun was redone, it was one of the first settings I ever played D&D in and I still love it to this day. Not to mention I love deserts.

I imagine as dark sun is to the Sahara, it's feywild will be to southwestern US deserts. And it's shadowfell will be to the winter in the Shara where nights can drop to subzero temperatures.

Dark Sun and Planescape are the only 2 settings i really liked in D&D. Ravenloft i quite liked too if the horror aspect was done right. Al-Qadim wasnt bad also

Most of the other D&D settings i found too generic or dull :o

A Question to the people making worlds based on frostburn. How did you handle economies in the world, as food and such is hard to 'farm' in arctic conditions. Did you make the snow only over a long winter? I recall trying to make a frostburn world myself but i couldnt make it work, as i wanted it to be all tundra's and glaciers, yet nothing more than hunter-gatherer tribes could really survive in such conditions, certainly no cities could be surported. I wanted bigger settlements so had to settle with a norway type harsh winters with around 6 months of real severe weather and 6 months clear for farming.

Well in my setting it is handled in a couple different ways:
  • A fairly large percentage of the population simply don't need to eat. As they are fully spirits placed within fully mechanized forms (think a combo of Cyborg and Warforged).
  • Commerce and trade is very important between the cities. So a city with more food or other material can trade with other cities. The trade is usually done with high-speed trains or airships.
  • Hunting and animal farms are fairly common practise. As well as harvesting various slimes, mushrooms, etc. from underground hot zones (much of this goes to animal farms as well).
  • Finally the most advance cities have their population supplement their diet with various pills, injections, etc. As well as minor forms of mechani/cyberization to keep the need for food down.

I'm eager to see 4e Darksun too, not for any love of the setting but just for to see WotC's willingness to depart from the core.

Darksun in 2e was pretty exclusive to the basics of D&D. While a lot of elements were added to the game to create the world of Athas, just as much had to be cut off. Planes cut away, magic reduced or repurposed, equipment done away with...

The 4e business model, though, has so far been "anything we print can be used with anything else we print." I'm anxious to see if that holds up with Dark Sun. Will they stay true to the setting and cut off Athas from the Astral Sea, shackle wizards, and reduce the level of wealth or will we see warforged and eladrin popping in from the Feywild to buy a magic sword from the Dragon?

Just adding my two cents here: I, too, would love to see Dark Sun released for 4th edition. It is, hands-down, my all-time favourite D&D setting.

i have nightmares about them releasing Dragonlance in 2010...
