If there is such a thread please point me to it.

I thought defiling would be much stronger than it was presented in Dragon Magazine, it looks kinda weak for what it does. (just a reroll? wtf?).

On the other hand, a pair of Infernal Warlocks, hellish rebuking non-stop, sends shudders to my spine.
Nonetheless i power that only works in pairs is kinda silly no? Tongue out

Prove me wrong.

There might be more to it. There is a possibility that there will be feats (or other powers even) that support defiling to make it even more powerful.

So far it's my understanding that Defiling only functions with Daily powers, which I'm not sure how I feel about.

I think the temptation and danger of Defiling would be more interesting if there existed differing tiers of defiling (minor to OMG), and the damage extended to enemies as well.

Passing up the opportunity to deal extra damage is hard to do, and isn't that how Athas got jacked to begin with?

We already know that were will be a lot more to defiling.  Just take a look at the Legendary Boons in the Dark Sun article posted in Dungeon this morning!

It's confirmed that there will be a Dragon King epic destiny (either the last podcast before the current one or one of the dev blogs, I forget off-hand) so I would be shocked and dismayed if the DSCG didn't arrive with robust defiling support.

After all, the only thing we've seen for certain is just the power arcane characters get for free

I've also adopted the one defiled zone in D&D Encounters: Dark Sun as a standard ability for defiled zones.  First of all, if you are a defiler, you ALWAYS defile with a spell, in my games.  At-will, encounter, daily, doesn't matter.  The level of the power = the close burst of defiling around you if you use Arcane Defiling, or close burst 1 if you do not, unless you make a successful Arcana check to hide your defiling.

In one of the D&D Encounters sessions, they have a zone that has been defiled built in to the map.  Anyone standing in the defiled zone only heals for half the value they normally would when healed by any effect.  Thus, any defiled squares in my games carry with them the same penalty.  It requires slightly more tracking, as each defiled area on the map needs to be marked.  But, since we tend to use dry-erase, adding a simple "D" in one corner of the squares in question is all that is required.

I also did adopt the oft-discussed option to make Arcane Defiling affect everyone, friend or foe.  I'm still not entirely sold on that, as it does add a bit more damage to the defiling classes.  However, since it hits, effectively, all enemies and allies, it makes the whole encounter deadlier for everyone involved.  This...seems to fit with defilers.

It is a double-edged sword. I've considered doing this myself, partially mitigated by the notion that most of the time, if a party goes up against an arcane spellcaster, that spellcaster will be a defiler, and also inflicting damage in this manner...

I heard something about DEFILED TERRAIN.

Is that gonna be dificult terrain or what?

looks interesting for controllers...

Nope, it wasn't difficult terrain in the mod.  It was simply: When standing in a defiled space, when you receive healing you heal for half the normal amount.

Also, some of the creatures in the encounter refused, for essentially superstitious reasons, to enter the defiled spaces for any reason.

I hate that defiling selectively harms only the defilers allies, ignoring everyone else in the area.  On the other hand, I would hate for defiling to be used as a minion killer.

I think I will probably houserule that instead of dealing any damage, defiling will slow or weaken everyone until EOT.

I think what we've seen is pretty good for simulating PC preservers. I love having the temptation to defile sitting on the character sheet, and a reroll on your most important powers is a pretty good temptation.

I wonder what, if anything, they'll say about rituals though.

The effect of defiling on enemies is modeled by the increased to hit and damage rolls.

Rituals would require less time and/or money.

One thing that bugs me: Can defiling occur if you're alone?

Wow, haven't thought about rituals, that seems good! Maybe Preservers can't use rituals because all them has a need for a sacrifice

Assuming there are Avangion's (the preserver's answer to the dragon) in the game, rituals are the only way I would see it getting done.

I've said this many times and I think we all feel the same.  Lets hope for both feat, paragon path and epic destiny support for the defilers.  I'm honestly surprised that there isn't a defiler theme.  Defilers need to be scary, imo, and so far a power that damages your allies so you can roll again on dailies is hardly scary.  There must be more to defiling then the one basic ability that has been introduced by WOTC.

I'm not sure why I hadn't considered this, but good call.

Yep. Both Avangion and Dragon King are epic destinies in the DSCG. Which implies they're not being done via rituals, since no other epic destiny requires you to perform a ritual to gain its benefits (not even the Archlich).

There is an underlying expectation, that the rituals required to become an Archlich, Dragon and Avangion are either done in downtime (between levels 20-21) or decided upon by the DM. Players can go on a "final quest" at the end of Paragon Tier which culminates with the players acquiring the components for, and casting, that final ritual. There's no need to write and print an entire chapter worth of rituals (remember Dragon Kings supplement) when DMs can make this stuff up, easily, on their own.
