did we all give up on darksun?

I was asking because it seems like this board is a ghost town. I seem to recall at some point long ago we were an extremely active community. Has every one moved on to other games? Stopped playing in general? In today’s legends and lore article Mearls said they are planning on having a program where the community can share and create user content openly. This makes me excited for 5th/next it means we don’t have to worry about copyright when it comes to next (if I understand the article right. The basic rules will be out the same day as the starter set, FREE! Everything you need to play form levels 1-20. With that said let’s get to work and show WOTC that this campaign setting is still very much alive.

Let’s work on a defiling system that has elements of second and 3.5 editions (notice I left 4th out), let’s have something along the lines that when you defile certain metamagic effects take place. How about updates on what we know or want in the campaign pre or post prism pentad. How about putting our heads together and figure what the crimson tower is (this one has been driving me nuts for some time)? In the prior playtest packet there is a gladiator sub class, what do we think? Can we improve upon it? Lastly, and this is a big one, my god we need a working psionic system.

Well, I figure Dark Sun is best left to the fans...  Plus, with the approach that DDN/5 is taking, it won't be too hard to do this.  Methinks things will pick up once 5e is off the ground and when someone tries to rally a 5E Dark Sun effort.

i thik additonal content should be handeled by the fans. seeing as how darksun fans, and this is understandable we all have diffrent play styles, but i think wotc should come out with the core setting. i check the next boards on a regular bassis and and if to posters agree on something thats a good month. I guess i will continue to use my homebrew rules and what is avaliable for next seeing as how the  next basic rules are around the corner. i guess we will see if this board comes back to life. I could use some advise on a psionic system me and some other regular players have been using for awhile but made adjustments with 5th in mind. we hit a wall on this and maybe the community could give me some feed back. should using a psionic power require a skill check to use? the problem i have with this is that we use power points( cost of each power is equal to level) , so how would we justife useing a skill check to use a power ? any suggestion would be helpful on this. Thanks.

Dark Sun is my favorite setting. I just don't have much to say right now. I am waiting for the PhB and the DMG to be released. As they are released, I will start posting "my D&DN Dark Sun" rules.

That being said, I like the 4e defiling rules. I probably won't use them wholesale, but I imagine that I will take some inspiration from them.

You will probably have to wait for the new rules and psionics before you can do to much Darksun work but I imagine you probably want to lose Dragonborn, fix Half Giants and more or less go back to a faithful adaption of the 2nd ed Darksun boxed set. This probably means you will have to make up a Templar class and cleric variants as well and maybe a gladiator sub school for fighters.

 Half GIant Racial mods.

Size Large

+4 Strength

 And thats about it.

i agree with all of you. That said di you see the newest on the next board the wild mage table(%) and the warlock fluff? if so i have a question when 4th came out or even when you all started to play did you allow warlock, wild mages, or Sorcerer ? when they added them with 4th IHOP it was just not right for me and th players so they were excluded. the sorcerer i think i saw in 3.5, i could be wrong but it looks like evenin 5th it will be a heratige thing so i can not see how i could include the class, what heratige would you use if you allowed this class? now the new wild mage i am all for it. any thoughts?

In other news, I now have 10 pages of single spaced notes in Word dedicated to converting Dark Sun to D&DN. I won't post it until the PhB comes out--so that I can clean up what I have based on that product--but all I really need now are wild talent and psionic rules. I will be leaving the psionic rules to WotC, which means that the only rules I will have to write myself (to make due until a psionics book comes out) are the wild talent rules (unless those are already in the PhB/DMG).

outstanding cyber -dave i look forward to seeing what you converted to next. i would like to be able to compare notes when you post it. as much as want wotc to handel psionics, and they are but MM has said in his last live Q%A that psionics will be latter on...becaus ebasic will be a free pdf ,the date is now july 3rdbecause specialty shops are getting the starteer set then and basics at fisrt will cover character creation and they will add to it when the realese of the other books comes out. do not know if you saw this but MM said that as far as other campaing settings goes there will be notes in the PHB and DMG on rules as needed for other campaings , darksun was listed as one of them. wonder if this means that there will be no re-boot of the other campaings like 4th did with darksun?he talked about how everthing to build or expand an exsiting or hombrew campaings will be in the DMG.

Too bad I cannot edit the thread title to darksun rises, or something. So here is was I am going to finally work on this week, the crimson monolith, don’t ask me why maybe it’s an OCD thing. But there is not a lot to go on so any and all suggestions are welcome.  It is smooth and warm to the touch, pulses like a living thing. No apparent doors or windows. Rumored that strange creatures emerge when the moons are high in the sky. Not a whole lot to work on, but here are some thoughts that I played with. It is something alive. Didn’t the Halflings of the blue age grow their buildings? Didn’t they also transform into other races, most of which were wiped out during the cleansing wars?  Could these creatures be other races or new races?  Could the monolith have been a refuge of some kind? The reason they can only appear on certain nights (I just cannot go down the lycanthropy road) is maybe as a defense mechanism it absorbs the suns light (would help explain why it is warm to the touch and pulse as if alive). For my part this will not just be fluff, but a fleshed out adventure that will slowly reveal the secrets of the monolith.

Hi there,

What made Darksun 3.0-3.5 very popular among the DS fan base?

  • First, it was obvious that there wouldn't be a T$R/WotC/Etc. official Darksun setting for D&D3rd edition.
  • Second, a strong fan core (without children!) emerged, build a web site and were VERY active on all possibles online community (mailing list, web site and forums).
  • Third, not just strong, well organized and gathered of peoples.
  • Fourth, their hard work and professionalism made them become OFFICIAL.

It's because they took the lead and nobody really started something elsewhere (except a few individual that made their own darksun 3 of who I remember 2 which I still have their work).

ATHAS.org is now a window of the past. Not that it is bad, because I still play Darksun 3.5 made by athas.org. MY darksun is D&D 3.5 athas.org. They inspired me and I myself helped them with a few things they produced.

They create the ruleset for DS 3.0 and 3.5, a monstruous manual, many adventures, many supplements, etc. DAMN this is HUGE !

A hell lots of documents were ready, but a few had recieved the final touch for editing (with pictures). Many peoples were working on this, but many were getting tired while other were starting to have kids and/or a more complex life. It have been a work of love for more than 5 years of conversion to get a very good DS3.5e.

But, the coming of 4th edition destroyed what was remaining of the sticky substance that was bonding these guys. What a shame. Even more, the fourth edition made dissapear many of the MOST important part of what made darksun a special place for us (the specialized cleric, per example).

None stand-up to keep the torch. But I understand, those who started it and those who helped them keep the faith had now families and/or less interest or none with 4e.

There is a need to complete what's been done in 3.5e (for those who wishes to stay 3.5) and use these documents to forge what's going to be the next iteration (DS5). Or simply start anew on a new website, with younger blood and passion. Do this and many peoples will want to follow your step like it's been done before.

In regards to converting any DS information into DDN it sounds like there will at least be some help.  I have copied the Q&A and tweets from Mike Mearls below for reference.

Good; there are people here posting again.

I like DS but I do not think about it 24/7: I see other games.

I play DS 2e (the first one released).  I do possess DS 4e, but, I do not have the 4e Players Manual or Dungeon Master's book so it is moot.  I really do not care if they reboot DS into whatever edition they want;  it is their world.   I do not play DS to the letter so any edition is fine by me, I just like 2e.

I have definitely not given up on Dark Sun. While I'm quieter here lately due to my D&D Adventurers League duties and a 7 month old son, I still manage to run a weekly 5e Dark Sun game on Monday nights. For old times sake, charactes started out at 3rd level and the highest is now 5th.

You can find some details of my Trouble in Raam game on Obsidian Portal.  dark-sun-5e.obsidianportal.com

I pulled together some appropriate Cantrips and 1st level spells for Wild Talents. None of my players have wanted to play Defilers or users of the Way, so I haven't really delved too deeply there. I did create a half-giant and thri-kreen PC races, but they're not polished enough for publication at the moment. I create most Athasian monsters more or less on the fly, so there's nothing there to post either. With a weekly game I don't really have time to polish anything at the moment.

In the last session the party raided the home of a defiler who lived on a giant tree of life in the Crescent Forest. The defiler was gone, but his minions were around to protect his home. I detailed the maps and monster encounters pretty heavily so that may be something that's fairly easy to publish.

As for Athas.org, I post when I have material and as other have said, some projects are being slowly worked on. Hopefully we'll see the Dead Lands soon, I was hoping for this year, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Maybe next year!
