Thinking of doing a sand box exploration of the city, using this as a starter. I don't know enough about Yaramuke, but I am seriously considering the transplanting of Vor Rukoth into Athas. The conversion will have to be pretty extensive anyhow, but since the book is mostly just hooks, it wouldn't be much more work than simply using the book in any other setting. A lot of it, for my purposes, depends on the flavor of the tieflings in Athas. |
| #3spacemonkey82Aug 11, 2010 10:39:05 | heck i still do not got a hold of tieflings in athas... They just do not seem to fit even after reading about them in the book |

They just do not seem to fit even after reading about them in the book Yeah the 4E DSCS book refluffing of them is fairly weak, so I plan on using their rules to represent 1st Generation Dray (the failed outcasts/experiments of Dregoth before he perfected the method and made 2nd Generation dray, which are what are being represented by dragon born in 4E) |
| #5spacemonkey82Aug 11, 2010 16:45:40 | what fiends are there supposed to spawn of. I thought the black(or I mean now it is just the grey????) kept outsiders out. beats me. Well they look cool at least |
| #6mouthymercAug 11, 2010 17:10:46 | Tieflings are the descendants of humans that bargained with "dark" powers in order to have the strength to survive on Athas. Those "dark" powers are left to the DMs to determine.
Just for starters. |
| #7tindalosihoundAug 11, 2010 17:18:59 | heck i still do not got a hold of tieflings in athas... They just do not seem to fit even after reading about them in the book I would make them Draxans. The humans of Ur Draxa have... changed, due to the dragon's influence, and portals to the elemental chaos in close proximity. Borys has sent out Draxans for various tasks before, and even in one of the video games, an army. So there can be strange folks who seem tainted by a terrible power and do not talk about where they are from. Their children breed true, becoming these tainted ones as well, and they are brutal geniuses. |

I know alot of people think they are cool but I must have missed that boat. I think the art for them in 4e is ridiculous. Horns and a tail!? Come on! Whatever happend to basically human with just a slight hint of the infernal. More like Fable, less like Hellboy. The 1st generation Dray idea is great. Fire Resistance, check. Pissed off, check. Messed up magical backstory, check. I'm doing it. Thanks Onanotaki. |
| #9OninotakiAug 11, 2010 21:57:26 | heck i still do not got a hold of tieflings in athas... They just do not seem to fit even after reading about them in the book Thanks! I am glad you like the idea, I have a bunch of other ideas over in this thread about reskinning player races to fit Darksun community.wizards.com/go/thread/view/758... check it out and feel free to leave feedback. |
| #10PennarinAug 12, 2010 0:47:22 | Mmm, on that other thread I mentioned the Black can be a Domain of Dread within the Gray (Athas' Shadowfell), housing at its core Rajaat's prison of the Hollow, and occupied by shadow giants and other servants. Considering this, there can be another popular Domain of Dread of Athasian origin: Kalidnay, which was seen in two different 2e Ravenloft supplements. So...tieflings could be the descendants of humans who once lived in Kalidnay, and when the cataclysm hit it they all got shifted in the Gray into their own private Domain of Dread. There they got twisted into horrible forms, taking nightmarish forms from the comatose Kalid-Ma projecting his nightmares unto the survivors over generations. Then one day they escaped or got released, back to Athas. Any takers? |
| #11turloughAug 12, 2010 8:20:23 | Wow! All good ideas. OP: I am definitely going to look into this as I kept Yaramuke and Kalidnay around in my current game. Thanks! As to tieflings, I think I have this wrong. The more I think about Athas and Sunwarped effects and the Pristine Tower, the more I think that weird should be the norm. I am very much thinking of Exalted here and how it creates things not normally possible. So, blue hair. Green hair. Strange markings. Mutants in appearance but nothing that is deadly. To that effect, tieflings, to me, would fit in perfectly regardless of whether we give them an origin. It allows the players to run free with their characters appearance. But, I do like them being from UrDraxa. My other thought is that Dark Sun 2E was too much like a medieval apocalypse and we need the weird version as it fits better. But that's me. As for the general idea of tieflings, or extra planar creatures, remember that the 2E boxed set(s), obviously the revised one more than the first one, did have at least two ways to get to the outer planes. There was a tower to the south that had a connection where demons/devils could come to Athas. The issue is whether or not these throw away lines should have been in Dark Sun is left up to the reader! turlough |
| #12bruulAug 12, 2010 9:57:33 | The Crimson Monolith. Yes I had thought of that for warlocks and possibly teiflings. As the source of a whole race, probably not but for a rare one off teifling it could work. |
| #13OninotakiAug 12, 2010 9:58:56 | The problem for me is that none of the other explanations (to me) give a satisfactory reason for why Tieflings are so tied to the fire damage descriptor. Failed experements (that breed true) in trying to transform people into the image of iconic dragons both explains it and the tendancy to have horns, tails, and useless wings. |
| #14FlashbackJonAug 12, 2010 10:51:26 | Well, other than the major influence of the Elemental Chaos and the Primordials. I mean, relating them to the other side of the Blood War is some sort of D&D heresy, but what is Dark Sun if not a massive conglomeration of D&D heresy? ![]() |
| #15mouthymercAug 12, 2010 11:11:57 | It is easy enough to change the keywords unless it is an official game. Why were tieflings in general tied to the fire keyword when there are devils out there spewing ice, poison or what have you? I think fire just got the whole devil aspect across the best, so that is why they did it. |
| #16tindalosihoundAug 12, 2010 12:09:14 | The problem for me is that none of the other explanations (to me) give a satisfactory reason for why Tieflings are so tied to the fire damage descriptor. Failed experements (that breed true) in trying to transform people into the image of iconic dragons both explains it and the tendancy to have horns, tails, and useless wings. Draxans would work, given their city is surrounded by a massive magma lake, and thus fire resistance would make sense and with the fire and magma elementals around they would easily take to fire magics; also the sky above them is covered by a huge dust storm, explaining their low light vision. Their society is one of social infighting, where the smartest and cruelist survive, leading to a culture of megalomaniacs. Also, without draxan influences, the existance of the term "Kaisharga" elsewhere would make little sense, since it comes from Draxan. (It means "Dead Lord") |
