| #2outlaw68Aug 16, 2009 2:05:34 | Well Dark Sun has been confirmed for 4th ed. One race I have trouble in converting to DS is the Eladrin. Do you think it would make sense to retcon the Elves in the Last Sea region into Eladrin? That is a definite possibility.. Of course if WOTC introduce the feywild (or something similar to the feywild) to Dark Sun, that could also explain them I would love to see something like, Athas's Feywild is dying (or has died) just as Athas is and the Eladrin are a race of elven refugees who have scratched out a living.. the people believe they are some sort of magical race that has come from mirages (i used that in my conversion) and don't fully trust them because of the magical background - there is no reason that particular backstory couldn't be attached the last sea elves even, i mean the feywild may have died fairly recently or it might have happened as Athas entered the Brown age or something.. .ot sure.. just spitballing here. |
| #3ZardnaarAug 16, 2009 2:16:30 | I just don' see the Feywild that well in a DS ssetting at least not without a make over. |
| #4hazharAug 16, 2009 11:51:46 | I just don' see the Feywild that well in a DS ssetting at least not without a make over. Seeing as Wizards seem intent on going back to the 2nd edition stance on cosmology - one cosmology for all settings, regardless of how well it fits - then I'm fairly certain we *will* see the Feywild in DS. |
| #5throkatAug 16, 2009 12:54:04 | My first thought was also to make the elves of the Last Sea region into eladrin. From everything I remember, Green Age elves were more akin to 4e eladrin, and Brown Age elves were more akin to 4e elves. Although this touches upon a greater question: Since time is getting reset to that of the original boxed set, does that mean that everything that was introduced later is getting ignored? Will there be mention of the Last Sea, the Kreen empire, the Dead Lands, or even the Valley of Dust and Fire? As for the Feywild... I wouldn't really mind an Athasian Feywild if they stay true to the core concept of it being, well, a more wild version of the world. Think about it... The deserts of Athas, except worse. That I could get behind. :evillaugh But if we're talking a green verdant Feywild... No thanks. |
| #6branothebladesAug 16, 2009 13:28:49 | Exactly. Rajaat's champions take their war to the Feywild and drain the life from it as they attempt to exterminate the eladrin and other fey races. The Feywild is now an uber-desert, an even more brutal version of Athas. The eladrin survived in small numbers. They could be attempting to revive the Feywild or the could be insane with grief at the desolation of their homeland and have it out for the beings of Athas. |

Will there be mention of the Last Sea, the Kreen empire, the Dead Lands, or even the Valley of Dust and Fire? I don't see why the geography would have to change. All that needs to change are things that were changed by the advancement of the metaplot. |
| #8AkrielAug 16, 2009 18:26:27 | Eladrin: An athasian feywild race that wield powerful defiling magic that have enslave the feywild gnomes to battle the Fomorians. I see the Athasian Feywild no better than Athas, completely wasted with some extremely dangerous forest ''protect'' by epic monsters. To explain the rare case of Athasian Eladrins, he have found a breach to Athas by misfortune and cannot return to his Feywild home. |
| #9mystictheurgeAug 17, 2009 9:03:21 | Why not just say that the Eladrin of Athas are more commonly known as Pyreen? |
| #10marius4Aug 17, 2009 9:27:03 | Eladrin in Dark Sun are probably best on a stick. Leave 'em out all day if you like 'em crispy! ![]() Just kidding. But aside from that idea I'm really not sure how one would fit them in at all, unless you use the "last of a dying breed" or "distant wanderer" thing for every eladrin PC. |
| #11branothebladesAug 17, 2009 12:08:59 | I think you could treat the eladrin like barghest. They are rare births within an elf tribe. The eladrin could either be an omen of good fortune and venerated or they could be seen as an aberration and tolerated at best. The second option would probably see a greater concentration of eladrin in the city-states or villages since they wouldn't be able to keep up with their taller kin on cross-desert treks. |
| #12marius4Aug 17, 2009 12:41:18 | They are rare births within an elf tribe. I think that's a pretty cool idea. Like throwbacks to the ancient bloodline and whatnot. |
| #13terminus_vortexaAug 17, 2009 13:02:54 | Eladrin on Athas could be from lands outside the explored canonical areas mapped out in 2E. Or they could be the original race of Elves from which the current marathon marauders descended. I'm not a big fan of the idea of a seperate Feywild for Athas. It seems to be heavily implied in the 2e setting that the functions normally carried out by the Faerie plane were relegated to the Prime.Spirits of the Land abound on Athas, and they are Fey. Pixies and Sprites were New Race descendnts of the Halflings, and had their origin and apocalypse on the Prime. A prevailing concept of Dark Sun was having other planes simplified or combined into one another, or with Prime Material Athas. The Grey functions as as an overlapping combination of the Astral and Ethereal Planes. The Black is the local area of the plane of Shadows, with a thinner veil between it and the Prime. The Outer Planes have minimal contact with Athas, except for certain dark Powers from the Lower Planes who have fashioned Living Conduits and grant spells to followers on Athas(this is straight from Dragon Kings). There's no need to corrupt the Athasian cosmology to fit 4e, and the developers have said they are making sure not to ruin Dark Sun by forcing it too tightly into the vanilla 4e cosmology ad content. I'm quite sure we will still have the same established DS planes, or they wouldn't have re-released the Prism Pentad series, and acknowledged it as one possible outcome of events on Athas, due to the myriad of references to Athas' unique cosmology. There will be no Feywild, no Astral Sea. Not inside the Grey, anyway. The Grey is and always will be the safety net that keeps Athas unique. It's the shell of the "bubble" of multiplanar space in which Athas resides. This, necessarily, means that there will be local conditions, planar and otherwise, akin to the 2e and 3.5 cosmology we all know. Anyway, Eladrin aren't too hard to fathom as a DS race. No more so than acknowledging the former existence of Pixies and Sprites. They could be either Pristine Tower mutants, a New Race, or even a progenitor or ofshoot of the Elven race. They fit every single descrption of the original Athasian elves(Stature, affinity for magic, appearance). They could even show up as a genetic atavism amongst the modern running Elves, who would probably abandon them unless they displayed power sufficient to make up for their inability to run (like Magnus). They could even have an organization like the Villichi, where they rescue their own from their potentially bleak lives amongst their kin, and have enough weight and fear behind their name to prevent their kind from being harmed before they are found. There's no limit to the number of ways Eladrin could be incorporated into DS. |
| #14angelofthenightAug 17, 2009 20:26:46 | I like branotheblades idea for the Eladrin and Feywild, especially the "Eladrin are bitter and hateful" part. |
| #15Razor767Aug 17, 2009 21:06:00 | PYREEN! yes! 'cept... aren't they all female? |
| #16terminus_vortexaAug 17, 2009 22:11:49 | Pyreen come in both genders, and are shapeshifters, with strong druid and psionic abilities. |
| #17ZardnaarAug 18, 2009 0:10:46 | 4th ed Pyreen. +2 wis, +2 intellignece shapechange like a doppleganger +2 nature/history And some other minor abilities. NPC Pyreen statted out ion a MM can have all the Druidic and Psionic abilities you feel like giving them. |
| #18Razor767Aug 18, 2009 0:45:15 | Am I thinking Villichi? |
| #19terminus_vortexaAug 18, 2009 0:52:28 | Yep. Long-necked pale-skinned skinny girls who are gathered into convents and taught psionics and weapons. |
| #20manyfistAug 18, 2009 2:32:13 | Well Athas only has the four elemental planes, The Black, & The Grey. Perhaps Eladrin are from the Black or the Grey is what happens when planes collapse and crash into each other (or parts of the plane). Or just perhaps they're unlucky souls who somehow got through the Grey, and found they couldn't get back out. Their ability to teleport could be going into the Grey for brief moment and popping back in a different place. |
| #21marius4Aug 18, 2009 7:11:58 | Why not just say that the Eladrin of Athas are more commonly known as Pyreen? The idea of eladrin as pyreen might be particularly fitting, considering Rajaat. |
