Epic Destiny: Dragon King

It makes sense to offer this but at the same time I'm kinda surprised to see it offered. I guess with the legenedary status that wizards wants epic tier to feel like there aren't a lot of other options in Athas, it just seems odd to me for this to be a standard player option in the book. Thoughts?

Jul 27, 2010 11:58:00 I think it's very cool, and an excellent option. I have no idea why you'd be surprised to see it offered. If players can play defilers, they would certainly be keen on becoming Epic Tier dragons.

It is the natural evolution of the old concept from 2E, just like the Epic Destiny: Avangion. Basically, pulled from the Dragon Kings supplement, and 4E-ified.

Prerequisite: Any arcane class, any psionic class

Simply require the person to be multiclassed(hybrid included) and you hit the flavor prereq.

Anyway on topic, I like the idea of it, I mean 3.5 Dragon magazine had a prestige class for becoming a Dragon-King, so if anything this time around it is exactly as it should be, Epic, instead of half way through.

Jul 29, 2010 7:01:31 Well, it's a campaign setting and player's handbook combined, so having more than two EDs might be pushing the page count too far. I won't be surprised if there're only two, and the rest (if any) show up in Dragon.

I hope there ARE others with differening flavor as the Demigod /Chosen Epic Destinies which are choices for a lot of people dont really gel too well with Darksun. Although.. a new Demigod on Darksun... geez that opens up a new real of possibilities storywise.

It will be interesting to see how Sorc Kings also treat any new 'Dragons' and 'Avangions' considering what they are all trying to do.

Elemental should be an ED. Lesser elemental transformation as a PP and Greater elemental transformation as an ED both with the Elemental Priest theme as a requirement I would guess. Problem is, you would either have to make them very general "generic elemental flavored features and powers" or have multiple versions of each.

Paragon paths and epic destinies are among the easiest to homebrew as they only add a few new options, unlike an entire class. So we might see new ones in dragons every now and then. But there are more darksun flavored EDs than dragon, avangion and elemental, that could be added later.

[edit] Mindlord would be an ED, not a PP.

Elemental and Spirit of the Land were also major 2e Epic Destiny equivalents, though not as prominant as the Dragon or Avangion. I think there already is a Spirit of the Land style ED, though it doesn't require Primal/Psionic like the original required Druid/Psionic. But that still leaves the Elemental.

What's a Pyreen?

In previous versions, Pyreen were a race from early in the Rebirth. They each have qualities of many of the other early races, seem to be immortal, and are all very powerful druids, as well as very psionically potent creatures. With their natural druidic abilities, they are rarely seen in their natural form, instead appearing as animals more often than not. They loathe defiling, have the ability to stop defiling when they are nearby, are immune to the power of defiling, and can rejuvenate defiled land to allow life to once more grow where it shouldn't.

Now, however? In 4E? My guess is this is the primal ED connected to the Spirit(s) of the Land. I'm betting that WotC is combining the old druid equivalent of a Dragon or Avangion ritual (which allowed druids to become one with a Spirit of the Land, gaining enormous powers while in their protected land), and the Pyreen race. Pyreen might very well now be any primal character that has reached epic levels and permanently bonded with a Spirit of the Land, rather than an ancient race.

When I heard that there wasn't gonna be an elemental ED, I assumed it was because there was already a primal ED that was close enough (I mean, we've got the lich ED, some angel EDs, elemental for primal makes sense to me). Alas, there isn't, but Elemental the Dark Sun EDs that would work just as well in other settings.

That may be a reason why it's not in the DSCG, they'll put in Dragon or Primal Power 2 or something for use in various settings.
