| #1cmdlukeSep 10, 2010 17:21:16 | I'm playing in my first dark sun game tonight. My usual group finished our 2 year campaign 2 weeks ago, and now we are starting an epic dark sun campaign from level 1. I'm playing a thri-kreen assassin/athasian minstrel. If anyone cares, I can post notes on the adventure. Cheers. ![]() |
| #2coffeegoblinSep 10, 2010 17:30:12 | I CARE!A LITTLE TOO MUCH!lol![]() seriousely though, hey. i'm gonna be running a ds campaign soon,myself.i was going to use the starter adventure,from the back of the book,but i hear it's a bit boring,for your 1st view of things darksun. i'd love to hear,what 1st lvl adventure you're gonna do. |
| #3modern_iconoclastSep 10, 2010 17:32:04 | I'm always curious to know where others chose to start their campaigns. Do you know the general idea of this campaign or its goals? |
| #4cmdlukeSep 10, 2010 17:33:27 | all I know is we are starting in Altaruk an heading to Balic. the dm specifically said he does not want to do the "you are gladiators in the arena and win your freedom" campaign. lol =) ok, i'll keep updating this post with session summaries. =) |
| #5slam-evilSep 10, 2010 17:55:35 | I'm curious to see how you RP the Thri-Kreen. Especially with the Athasin Minstrel Theme. I suppose with four arms you could be a pretty adept juggler. |
| #6cmdlukeSep 13, 2010 15:02:39 | First game went great. everyone had a blast. we were down one player so it was my thri-kreen assassin, a human psion and a human battlemind. We had all just arrived in Altaruk. none of us knew each other, and we all had different motivations for being there. We were each confronted by 3 very large Muls and were escorted to a small merchant house and locked in a room. Soon a dwarf named Raff informed us that we were brought there to do a job that he would pay us for. we were chosen because we were new in town and had no knowledge of him or his plight so we would be impartial to his situation. Raff owed a great deal of money to House Raam in Balic, but they were making it difficult for him to pay back his debt so they could continue to charge him interest. He needed us to escort his payment from altaruk to balic. He would pay us 200gp each. we were all pissed that he kidnapped us so we convinced him to throw in 50 survival days. Raff was going to board a boat to Balic with his payment. the payment (a large wooden box) would then be transfered to the wagon he provided for us. We then joined a caravan on the way to Balic. on the way, we were attacked by a group of lizard folk. we fended them off, but the caravan lost 5 guards. the owner of the caravan believed that the lizard folk were after our cargo so we were kicked out of the caravan and had to wait a couple hours before continuing on. A ways down the road, we saw the rest of the caravan off to the side of the road. it was destroyed and the bodies were being picked apart by drakes. we decided to just let them be and continue on our way. Just before we hit the first checkpoint at an oasis, we were hit by a sandstorm. the lizard pulling our wagon go spooked and took off pulling the wagon behind him. it took a sharp turn and detached itself from the wagon. the force of the turn threw us all from the wagon. we had to defend ourselves from a sandmonster during the storm. once we defeated the beast, we went to collect the payment. as we tried to load the box back onto the wagon, it began to make noises inside. we opened it up and Raff was waking up from his drug induced sleep. I noticed that he was trying to hide a broken metal crown. we questioned him and forced him to give us the crown. it was an artifact that he was going to use to pay off his debt. we weren't very happy with the situation, but we wanted our payment. we made him walk with us on our way to the oasis, where he bought us all mounts to continue on. the next day, we set out again towards balic. we made camp at night, but during my watch we discovered that we had camped out on a massive hidden cloud ray. it began flying while we were camped. our psion used telepathy to convince it to land so we could get off. while it was on its way down, we were attacked by some flying bird swarms. once we defeated them, we landed on an island in the middle of a silt river. we got off of the cloud ray before it took off, and found a wrecked ship with a group of travellers. it turned out to be the boat that Raff was supposed to be travelling on. it was indeed attacked trying to get to him and his payment. we helped the travellers repair the ship and coninued on to balic. Raff was able to make his payment, then payed us for escorting him. I am now free to seek my assassination mark in Balic, the other two party members want to head back to tyr, where they were headed before being force into this escort mission. ------- We are having some scheduling conflicts, so the next game won't be for a few weeks. I'll update with another post after the next game. |
| #7cmdlukeSep 13, 2010 15:05:00 | I'm curious to see how you RP the Thri-Kreen. Especially with the Athasin Minstrel Theme. I suppose with four arms you could be a pretty adept juggler. He fronts as 'The Silent Magician' disguising his shadow magic as a magic show. He performs in merchant houses to gain access inside their walls, then uses his stealth, perception and thievery to get information on his assassination targets. |

| #10cmdlukeSep 13, 2010 15:56:44 | yeah, it was pretty cool. Much different since we are so used to playing at level 20 with tons of magic items. we got through 3 encounters and 2 skill challenges in less time than it would take us to do 2 encounters and 1 skill challenge at 20th level. =) |
| #11GrummoreSep 14, 2010 7:26:16 | Holy molly! Why did the GM promised you 200 gp each!!! It's a hell of a treasure hoar! Last time I gave that huge load of money to my players is when they reached the 16th level. A 200 ceramic pieces would do the job no? And even that is a huge load of money (it represent 2gp each!!!! for level 1 player!). I am curious to understand. Thanks! |
| #12jahatch28Sep 14, 2010 8:51:22 | I don't think they really expect players to only get ceramics (copper equivalents) in this edition of DS.. the magic items seem a bit more rare, but if you aren't incluidng many magic items, then there will be mostly cash rewards... and if most of the encounters (like with the sandmonster, lizards, and bird swarms) didn't have any treasure parcels, then maybe the DM just lumped them together as the reward for completing the quest... Also, if I were one of those PCs and that dwarf was lying to me, I'd need a pretty good reward to stay on track and not just take is crown for my own and leave him in the desert to die =p... so maybe the DM was appealing to the players greed to keep them on track (just a guess!). - Josh |

And even that is a huge load of money (it represent 2gp each!!!! for level 1 player!). I don't have the book handy to quote the relevant section, but I think the 4th ed Darksun went with the convention of still measuring things in gold piece value, even if they coins are not actually gold. In many cases they are ceramic from one of the city states, or if not likely silver. But becuase the cost of goods listed in all the other books is still gold, they call it gold to be simple. 200 gp is enough to outfit a party of 5 for 8 days of wilderness travel in 4th ed. Thats hardly a huge treasure horde. While not coming actually in the form of 200 gold coins, its an easy way to keep track of prices, so you are not sitting around trying to figure out how many Urikite ceramic pieces it takes to buy a set of thieves tools in Tyr. |
| #14atomicbananaSep 14, 2010 11:19:25 | at the same time, 50 survival days seems a bit overkill. that's 250gp by itself. I know it goes down pretty fast with a party of 3-4, but still... Does it seem like a little much to anyone else? asking as a prospective DM here, starting a DS campaign in a few weeks /edit |
| #15snakefeather1Sep 14, 2010 11:35:00 | It might be a bit much, but the desert is filled with thieves, and what can be given can be taken away. They might have to go a while before getting more money. They might also need some equipment. It's tough to make it in Athas without pack animals, a wagon of some sort, and a few barrels of water. I think a creative DM can squeeze that money out of them pretty quick. |
| #16cmdlukeSep 14, 2010 14:41:31 | It was 200gp worth of iron ingots, not actual gold. We lost most of our survival days when we were thrown out of the wagon in the sandstorm. believe me, I wanted to kill him and take his crown, but we all wanted to get our payment, and it would be easier for me if I had new allies in Balic, rather than just being on my own looking for my target. I spent the rest of the journey (when we weren't in combat) with my tortoise blade poking into his back, just in case. ![]() |
| #17JabbaVonHuttSep 15, 2010 8:01:08 | at the same time, 50 survival days seems a bit overkill. that's 250gp by itself. Not to mention that its an additional 400 lbs. to lug around assuming that they don't have some form of pack animal. |
| #18FlashbackJonSep 15, 2010 10:28:44 | It was 200gp worth of iron ingots, not actual gold. In Dark Sun, that's... what... half an ingot? ![]() |
| #19cmdlukeSep 15, 2010 14:36:56 | at the same time, 50 survival days seems a bit overkill. that's 250gp by itself. we had a wagon being pulled by a giant lizard. thats why we lost most of the survival days when we were thrown from the wagon. |
