I was planing on using dark sun for my first dnd campaign for dming.
I'm to much of a nice guy so I figured pick the land that will be just cruel enough to allow me to be nice without feeling like I'm coddeling, one of my friends that will be playing used to dm and was considered a vicious dm. However he does not want to dm dnd games anymore.

however I dont know what I would need book wise.

I know the 3 core books DM PHB1 and MM1
as well as the dark sun campaign guide and the first adventure.
but for those that were able to play that first adventure booklet in advance what else would I need?

PHB3 couldn't hurt. It's got the new psionic stuff. (classes/races) Or get a month subscription to DDI and get access to the character builder, which has all the updated material. You also get the adventure tools, for building monsters.

I would suggest using the core books and pick up a pre-made adventure to get comfortable with running a game. Afterwards, you could incorporate Dark Sun into your campaign and probably find yourself with a few ideas to throw in on top of it.
Also, pick up the DMG2 - it's stuffed with great advice to get ya started.
I agree with Duke - a subscription to DDI would be a good investment, especially if you're gaming quite regularly in which case a years subscription would be more advisable.
I would highly recommend getting your hands on Dungeon Delve though, encounters are simple to pull up and easy to drop into any campaign. Also a good book to have on hand is the Adventurers Vault, more equipment options are always welcomed with players. Hope this helps and have fun.

The Essentials line is coming out soon: this will be the original core rules written and organized properly. Check out the preview: www.wizards.com/DnD/Article.aspx?x=dnd/d...

The website tells you what the different 'kits' contain.

The 'adventure booklets' that have been released so far are self-contained.
