Eelar Royal eelar honey is sickeningly sweet purple fluid that is similar to kank nectar. Consuming one pint of the jelly will fulfill all nutritional needs of a character for the day. The sweet smell of the jelly attracts ants, both regular and giant. (The Black Spine) Eelar may not be native to Athas, and may have traveled there with the githyanki.

(City-State of Tyr) In Draj a popular dish is erdlu stew and steamed corn. In Draj, a dried, pemmican-like erdlu meat is part of the local diet. Erdlu eggs (Cheap) Erdlu eggs have a wrinkled, leathery shell, but are delicious and also nutritious. When eaten raw, the red yolks have a zesty, gamey taste that is both satisfying and invigorating. The whites form a spongy cake that tastes like cheese when cooked. (City-State of Tyr) If eaten raw, the egg can take the place of a day’s water requirements, but only for up to a week’s time. (The Wanderer’s Journal) The eat is an excellent source of nutrition, and can keep a man alive for months at a time for the eggs are packed with a variety of nutrients and essential vitamins. If eaten raw an egg can replace one gallon of water. However, it is not a perfect substitution and a man can only live on this egg water diet for one week, before he needs water. Fordorran The flesh of a fordorran is edible but tastes so terrible most races prefer not to eat it. However many elven tribes know how to prepare fordorran meat in a way that prevents the meat from developing a bad taste. (Monstrous Compendium II: Terrors Beyond Tyr)

Jankz (Cheap & Expensive) Jankz meat can be served cut into bits and placed on a skewer so that it is grilled over an open flame. Because of the poison sacs, caution must be taken when preparing jankz. As a general rule, one jankz provides a meal for one man. Larvae Candied larvae are the color and shape of jelly beans but wiggle about. They are served as a dessert. (Dragon Crown)
Lizard (Cheap) Lizard meat is used in spicy stews. (Freedom) Small lizards live in the rocky badlands and foothills of the Ringing Mountains and can provide a meal for a desert traveler. (Dragon Crown) Sadira eats a lizard to stay alive in the desert. (Amber Enchantress 282)
Lizard – Sweet Meat Sweet lizard meats are sold in the arena in Tyr. (Crimson Legion)
Locust Rikus eats locust in the desert to stay alive. (Crimson Legion 184 )
Meat – General On a voyage through the Silt Sea the captain eats salted and dried meats. (Obsidian Oracle 95)
Mekillot (Expensive) Mekillot steak is a stable for nobles and rich merchants. (City-State of Tyr) In Raam, mekillot steak in a wine and berry sauce is served at banquets for nobles and other powerful figures. (Intrigue in Raam, Polyhedron 134)
Millipede The gith of the Black Spine Mountains feed their slaves with mush made from millipede chitin. It is not known for its nutritional value, but does keep the slaves alive. (Black Spine)
Mouse Mice are found as vermin living on a giant. (Obsidian Oracle 133)
Nox Nox are subterranean six-legged lizards. They typically grow up to 3 feet long and are considered harmless. For creatures dwelling underground, nox can be a primary source of meat. (Black Spine)
Pig There are pigs in the Forest Ridge. (Dragon Crown). It could be that pig refers to an aprig on Athas.
Pterrax The eggs of pterrax are a very valuable source of food. One pterrax egg provides up to two meals. (Monstrous Compendium I: Terrors of the Desert)
Pulp bee Worker pulp bees produce a sweet tasting liquid that is very nutritious. One quart of the liquid can provide the nutrients for 2 days. When it hardens the honey looses some of its nutrition but can still provide the nourishment of 1 day of food. (Monstrous Compendium I: Terrors of the Desert)
Rabbit In Draj they raise rabbits. (Veiled Alliance) (An Athasian rabbit is pictured in Arcane Shadows.)
Ram Rams are domesticated by giants (Obsidian Oracle171)
Rats There are rats on Athas. (Monstrous Compendium I: Terrors of the Desert) (Wanderer’s Journal) T’ranks may be Athasian rats. They are mentioned in Intrigue in Raam, and sound like rats, but no description is given.
Red cactus grubs. (Cheap) Most red cactus bulbs contain 1 to 3 dozen grubs. The grubs are thumb-size with brown heads and white scaly bodies. Some people pop the heads off, while others eat the grubs whole. (Complete Book of Gladiators)
Red cactus Grubs Red cacti contain little warm bodies of grubs about the size of a thumb. The grubs have white scale covered bodies and brown heads. They are considered nice and juicy. The heads are squeezed off before sucking the insides out. The taste is a rich gamey flavor, but was a little too sweet for Rikus’s taste. The heads and empty grub skins are toss away. (Crimson Legion 227) I have named these red cactus grubs based on the description in the book. It is possible that these are not the same red cactus grubs mentioned in the Complete Book of Gladiators as there are some differences in their description. Namely, the Complete Book of Gladiators states that the grubs are eaten whole, while here the insides are sucked out.
Renks (Cheap) Renks are small slugs that are eaten raw. Each slug has 4 oz of water within it. 16 rents provide enough water for one day’s requirement. (Complete Book of Gladiators) When consumed raw each renk provides the equivalent of a ½ cup of water. An active man would need to eat 32 renks a day to replace his water requirement for the day. Rotgrubs Fried rotgrubs are served in Tyr. (Verdant Passage 83)
Scrab A single elf can survive on the meat of a scrab for days. Elves of the wastes eat scrab meat. (Monstrous Compendium I: Terrors of the Desert)
Sheep Giants raise large sheep herds on islands in the silt sea. (Wanderer’s Journal) Giants use sheep hide when manufacturing clothing and sacks. (Obsidian Oracle 14) Sheep are raised in Balic (Obsidian Oracle 44, 125, 137)
Silt crabs Silt crabs live on the shores of the Sea of Silt. (City by the Silt Sea)
Silt Horror – White The white silt horror is said to be good eating by the few giants that have killed one. (Monstrous Compendium I: Terrors of the Desert)
Silt Horror – Brown The brown silt horror can be eaten but the few giants that have tasted it say its taste leaves much to be desired. (Monstrous Compendium I: Terrors of the Desert)
Silt mussels M’ke caravans have been known to carry these coruscations that live in the Silt Sea. (City by the Silt Sea)

Silt Serpent The giants and others who live along the shores of the Sea of Silt know that silt serpents make excellent meals. Their meat is sweet, tasty and extremely juicy, and it can be eaten raw or cooked over a slow-burning fire. The Sky Singers elf tribe makes a particularly famous dish using silt serpent meat and faro leaves. The meal, called alrasb in elven, can be sampled in Nibenay’s Hill District or the food tents of the Sky Singers road bazaars. (City by the Silt Sea)

Wezer Wezers produce a honey on which they feed. Eating at least one quart of wezer honey a day heals an additional 1d8 hit points. (A Little Knowledge)
Z’tal (Cheap) Z’tal meat can be prepared in bits on a skewer and grilled over an open flame. Slabs of the meat are also smoked to prepare for journeys across the desert. (City-State of Tyr) The meat of a z’tal is dense and course. The tail and hind legs make excellent eating and considered the choice portions. The tail and legs are often roasted and can provide up to 6 meals. (Monstrous Compendium I: Terrors of the Desert) Z’tals can be used to prepare a stew. One z’tal can provide enough meat for a stew that would feed 12 people. (Dragon Crown)

Betel nuts Betel nuts are eaten by most citizens of Nibenay. Eating the nuts over years stains the teeth. (Veiled Alliance) The Nibenese also grind the nuts into tasty pastes. The user puts a betel nut between his upper gums and his cheek, and the juices slowly percolate through his skin for a couple of hours. The nut leaves reddish brown stains on the teeth and gums. Cactus – General Cactus grow in every conceivable shape: squat spheres covered by long yellow needles, twisted masses of ground-hugging tubes, tall spine-covered barrels as high as twenty feet, even in tangled masses with tree-like limbs. Many of these cacti are sources of both food and water, but some are deadly. Cactus – Red cactus (Cheap) Red cactus is round succulent plant with spiny thorns. Typically the cactus is used to harvest red cactus grubs, but the fruit of the cactus can be eaten. (Complete Book of Gladiators) Red cactus is a round cactus the size of a man’s head. It has red, finger length spines and a leathery skin. Inside eat red cactus are red cactus grubs. Cactus – Rock cactus A rock cactus can be peeled if it is first incapacitated. Each rock cactus provides approximately 1 pound of food. The taste is vaguely similar to apples. In addition, a rock cactus provides up to 4 pints of water. (Monstrous Compendium II: Terrors Beyond Tyr)
Chadnut The chadnut is sweet. People place them in their mouths and suck on them to get the flavor. The seeds of the chadnut are peppery and burn the tongue and water the eyes. The seeds leave a fiery aftertaste in one’s throat. (The Cerulean Storm 4)

Faro (Fruit – Expensive, Bread – Cheap) Faro is a twisted cactus with a fruit blossom that blooms delicious fruit only once per decade. The faro needles can be grown into flour for bread. (City-State of Tyr) Faro leaves are also an ingredient in stews. (Road to Urik) Faro is a dwarf cactus tree, as tall as a man with a handful of scaly stems that rise to a tangle crown of needle-covered boughs. It is a cash crop in Tyr. Each piece of sweet fruit only once a decade was a delicacy worth more than the plant itself. (Verdant Passage 63) The needles are made into a gruel for slaves. (Verdant Passage90) Faro blossoms have a sweet scent and have huge red flowers on the rare occasion they bloom. (Verdant Passage 173) Faro is made into a bread. (Verdant Passage 223) The last seems to imply only that it is a dry wine.

I searched through all of the Dark Sun accessories which I had, and found any mention of food or something that is edible. For each item I copied the description given in the text. While not an exact quote it does give the relevant information. Some entries are sparse, because not much was given. Others are longer, having multiple sources that mention them. Occasionally I have added my comments to clarify or explain something. These are written in italics. Otherwise I wanted to refrain from adding my own ideas to the list, to make the list as Dark Sun canon as possible. I did not include pricing, because most of the items mentioned rarely had an exact price mentioned. I did try to note if certain products were expensive or cheap if it was stated in the text. To determine the classification, I used the following. Expensive is anything that is only part of a noble or rich merchant’s diet. Cheap is anything that can be eaten by slaves or common people. Sometimes there was no mention either way and so I did not include any designation on these products. I did make some guesses here. If the text mentioned an item was a noble treat then I labeled it expensive. If it said a product was eaten by slaves, then it was labeled cheap. This listing is specific to the Tyr Region, so I did not include an life-shape food from the rhul-thuan halflings or the fish heavy diet of the Last Seagians. Since originally posting this list, I was reading some of the source books again and noticed a few foods that I missed the first time I compiled this list. Those are now added to the list above. "Mad kank disease" had broken out at a kank ranch and produced a short run of bad kank meat in Balic. I had PCs choose from these "typical Balican commoner breakfasts" before they knew what was going on: erdlu eggs bread and oil cactus fruit and rock tubers warm grain gruel bone marrow soup sizzling-hot kank bacon Of course some poor guy picked the bacon and got sick, before the PCs were hired to fix the problem. |
