Go beyond the impossible and kick reason to the curb!
Who the hell do you think I am!

This is a post inspired by my love for Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, a thread in the Eberron boards and my interest in the Post Apocalyptic genre. Dark Sun is an interesting setting and I wanted to know how you would combine the GRIMDARK of DS with the hope-filled idealism of TTGL.

The story of TTGL begins like this:
Show

A young boy named Simon is a Digger in the underground village of Jeeha. He is friends with the hotheaded Kamina, who dreams of seeing the surface. One day, their village is attacked by this giant robot. As Kamina makes a speech against the invader, a woman from the surface, Yoko, shoots the robot. A fight breaks out and during a tunnel crawl they find a mech. Using this mech they defeat the giant robot and see the surface.

The gang meets other people on the surface. The surface is a crater filled hellhole where humans are stalked by giant robots called ganmen. Simon and Kamina take part in defeating ganmen and even capturing one. They eventually meet other people and start a rebellion against the ganmen.

Hahaha, that made me laugh so loud. So your mecha is made from sticks, bones and shells then? Sorry, Let me explain: there's precious little metal on Athas, so little in fact, that this kind of technolgoy would never have been developed, even in the Blue Age. Don't make Athas as your generic Post Apocalyptic (Eberron style) world, because it's not.
If you are realy determined: make your mecha an abandonned relic from the Purification wars. One that was never deployed (too costly to be effective) and so no-one knows about it. Then, to roleplay the significance of a metal warmachine appearing, everyone in the tablelands will hunt your mecha down for the metal.

Please, Joni-san, stop...whatever this is. You've posted perfectly normal posts in the past. Why the sudden incomprehensibility worthy of a troll?

No, I was thinking some sort of bio-construct like other life-shaped items/artifacts.

Sorry, Let me explain: there's precious little metal on Athas, so little in fact, that this kind of technolgoy would never have been developed, even in the Blue Age.

I knew there's little to no metal on Athas. But I did mention that Lagann would be a life-shaped artifact, no?

When was life-shaping developed? I'm no expert on Dark Sun history and canon.

Don't make Athas as your generic Post Apocalyptic (Eberron style) world, because it's not.

I wouldn't rate Eberron as a Post-Apocalyptic world. Sure, the country of Cyre was destroyed by some sort of supernatural cataclysm, but life goes on mostly normal everywhere else.

Did I mention I saw the Athas equivalent of Lagann as being life-crafted?

As a general note: This thread is a thought experiment. A "what if..." sort of thread.

Now, would Lagann be plant- or animal-based? If animal, what type? I'm thinking insectoid.

A little left-field is a good thing.
Just about every concept in your post is in stark contradiction to the DarkSun campaign though.

Having said that... there's no reason not to tackle it with a little interpretation & creativity, sometimes breaking the rules is just the right thing to prompt ideas or hold something of a metaphorical mirror to your work & see it by a different light.

Maybe host the initial stage within the BlackSpine mountains (I know its a controversial site but one I'm personally very fond of) using Yathazor, City of Calamity. It has a touch of the alien and..... the giant robot might be a creation of the Githyanki unleashed.

You've got me with a woman making a speech against a giant robot capable of destroying an entire village with apparent ease and then shooting it - happy to solve anything else but that, of all things I just can't come to grips with... it's like getting angry at a collapsing building & shooting it to make your point.

Anyway, back on track - the tunnel fight scene is again easily interpreted from the material presented in the BlackSpine adventure... finding a Mech though... ummm well, I'd have to suggest a Githyanki adaption of an undead war beetle... that was for some reason abandoned ... or perhaps more likely (your choice of) giant lizard/s or spider/s with psionic controlling devices (again, found in the adventure & conceivably used by the Gith).

I hate falling back on using undead unless there's a good reason for it though.

You could go with The Green Rhul from Psionic Artifacts of Athas.... where rather than a single Green Rhul a veritable army of them were unleashed - certainly a significant challenge to deal with.

Clearly the greatest danger for any adventurer would be standing near Yoko.
