Having only played 3rd edition I need a little help with a halfling animist.

I have a character concept of a Cannibal Halfling Connoisseur who travels the world seeking out new and fresh foods to wet his pallet. He left his homelands because he had tasted everything there and wanted to see what the world has to offer. He has very good survival skills and can cook up a storm when needed for his companions. He personally perfers his meat raw but is willing to cook vegetables and herbs to make the meat go down easier. He is the first halfling in his tribe to realise that Thri-Kreen need to be boiled to make them not so sticky on the inside, trick is finding something big enough to boil them in. When in cities he sells herbs/spices and wild growing fruits and vegetables since for some reason no one wants to buy meat from him.

I felt that an animist shaman class would work best for him so he can be a boon to his companions in combat. So his time not spent pursuing yummies is spent practicing his families ancient art of Shamanism.

My problem is that I don't really understand how Shamanism works in game. I also need help with a build as I can't possibly get through all these books for 4th edition without going nutty. What weapons/armor would be ideal? Should I multi-class as a primalist or some other class? What skills/stats should I get?
