Handpainted Vault of Darom Madar maps for you

Hi Everyone --
Despite being a very inept artist I've been in a craftsy mood lately, and in a 2 week break between sessions -- I'm running "Vault of Darom Madar" and decided to draw and watercolor some versions of the battle maps in the module (and a bonus one for Silver Springs caravansary).  It's just my opinion, but I really hate the way the dungeon tiles look, too computer texture/video game looking, etc. and hand drawn maps have always been one of my favorite parts of D&D.  So I was just going for something quick and sloppy here, to get the colors and vibe I wanted to get across for that early 90's Dark Sun flavor.

These are all scaled for 100dpi battle grids.  They were drawn on a grid even though there are no lines on the paper (I can do some grid overlays or larger res files if anyone needs them.)  I'm not sure if there are any printing options out there for poster maps that are inexpensive enough.  I was going to try using the images with Masterplan I think.

They aren't perfect or polished (or even finished really) but maybe someone finds them useful.  If anyone likes them, I'm happy to keep contributing more.  And I'm very open to any requests for Dark Sun maps/community resource stuff.  I've been doing one per night while watchin' TV.

Cheers,
Lars

Well that is awesome.  Nice size too, I loaded the vault map into Maptools and it comes out good.  Only thing I would say is I'm not sure if the grid lines you drew are supposed to be tile/floor cracks or an actual battle grid.  Laying another grid on top looks confusing.

Heres what I mean:

I'm running Vault now, game is the first link in my sig.  We are about to do the Crimson Oasis encounter then on to Silver Springs.  So I will definitely steal these    The middle one especially, could make a nice night encounter, wagons all circled around.  What could possibly go wrong...

Best PM me some assignments before I get too sidetracked making maps for my own!

Ritorix: awesome.  I may end up redoing the Vault maps, those were drawn @ 1/4" = 1" instead of 1/2" = 1" like the others so they're a little sloppy.  Yeah the lines won't match up exactly.  I'll try to get these better formatted for MapTools/Masterplan with some grid and no-grid versions.

If people are wanting to use these in digital programs like that, I will keep that in mind -- for example on that second map I could easily draw the vehicles and rock pieces as tokens to be placed as desired.

I do a pbp game so that is all digital, Maptools lets you overlay a grid of adjustable size.  But if I were ambitious enough to print these for home use, yeah would probably need some grids.

Inspired me to upload all my maps that I've used so far.

Great maps.

I made an edit to the dungeon one to overlay a grid.  Also removed a lot of the black for those who want to print it.

Phoffman, that's great!  I forgot to draw those treasure piles, your additions are perfect.
I did a better map for the "crypt of sorrow" room last night, I'll upload it soon.

Just some notes on the dungeon:
This can be used for 4 encounters, the three in the dungeon and the one outside when the characters are attacked when leaving.

I elaborated a bit on the passageway between rooms 1 & 2... the idea was that there was a bit of a cave-in (as described a few times in the module) and the entrance to the tunnel leading to the vault was obscured, requiring a bit of a "search for the secret entrance challenge".  The facts of the Tsalaxa & Madar undead should clue the party into the idea that they're in the right spot, and cave in rubble suggesting there's more to be found.

I added a "throne" in the back room and added a few obelisk structures (non-trapped) to match the ones in the second room throughout, those could be fleshed out a bit.

thanks so much for sharing these maps, they're absolutely fantastic. we're definitely using these for the vault! i showed my players a preview (silver springs) during our play session last night, and they were really excited.

Acelte, thanks!  Here are two better maps for the vault.  I've tried to do a better job this time and padded them to read at exactly 100dpi grid for use in MapTools, Masterplan, etc.   Hope you enjoy!

Your map worked perfectly, thanks again.  Using your Vault maps now as my players battle the undead horrors inside.
