Did a DM at least punish a totally failed and malignant group with the Dragon, at least? Random death by Dragon? I'd be curious to see if anyone ever dared. Of course, I expect that anyone who ever tried lost. Happy darksunning. |

A couple of Dark Sun campaigns ago, I had to cut the campaign short because we were moving from Holland to England. So the arc ended with the Dragon capturing Korgunard and the sole surviving PC (following a near-TPK). The PC in question was a kreen, reputed to be the reincarnation of 10,000 generations of kreen warriors. In the final scenes of the campaign, the kreen did a deal with the Dragon: the Dragon would gain the 10,000 souls embedded within the kreen and use them to fuel his rituals to keep Rajaat imprisoned. In return, the Dragon would spare Tyr the levy for the next ten years. Korgunard was slain and the kreen died, offering up his previous incarnations to a "greater" cause. In an old 2e campaign, a party of high-level heroes from my homebrew wound up on Athas briefly (they had to steal something from Ur Draxa and use it on another plane). The Dragon caught them at it and beat seven shades of snot out of them while they fled for their lives. They didn't even try to fight it. So, I guess "no" would be the answer to your question. But it's a qualified "no". (In my current DS game, the Dragon is only a myth. No, really, he is... :D) |

I'm trying to assemble stats and such for Ur Draxa, but it's hard. Must have been fun. Never used old Borys myself... although tempted. In the old stats from 1st box, he could physically attack, use psionics and a magical spell simultaneously every round. Crazy. Yes, he is just a legend. Just like Tithian, I don't believe in the Dragon either. |
| #4GMforPowergamersJan 12, 2009 22:04:09 | my first PC in dark sun fought Boris... I was 9th or 10th level gladiator wild talent Human...three of our 6 memebers died...I was one of the survivors. we were going somewhere, and we had to get by him. The whole encounter was to 'survive' him, not beat him... |

PCs fled Athas with the Dragon lauching spells at their boat, minus their weapons. A prepared reasonably min maxed party of level 15 or so could probably take him in a combat if he was away form Ur Draxa. I normally use Dragon footprints, destroyed caravans, or corpes drained of life via dragon magic to get the point across. |

My compliments!!! Why, thankyou! It was an unusual tone on which to end the game, but seeing as I was leaving the country anyway, it seemed fitting. Compliments should go to the player as well for coming up with the idea for the deal on the spur of the moment and turning the tables on old Borys. And for those who worry that it's too much like a happy ending, I should point out that the near-TPK in questions was due to one of the PCs betraying all the others to Tithian and leading them all into a fatal ambush at the hands of his agents. Can't have too much optimism on Athas after all, can we? :D |
| #8phoenix_mJan 13, 2009 20:10:25 | Face the Dragon! Are you smoking Esperweed? I've yet to be in (PC) or have a (GM) group of characters even make it in to double digits. Face the Dragon... yeah right. |
| #9lurking_shadowJan 13, 2009 20:28:16 | While I have never DMed a fight with the Dragon, the endgame of my campaign is planned to be Borys' demise, followed by Rajaat's resurrection. While the PCs are still far too inexperienced, further along the road I hope to make a (fairly modified) version of the Prism Pentad with the player characters replacing the heroes of Tyr. |
