To pick up a little Dark Sun flavor I could recommend playing a Mul when the books come out. Muls are a combination Human/Dwarf hybrid bred specifically to be gladiators, so when that race comes out I am sure it will compliment your build.
This is the 3rd edition rules update done by Athas.org. We don't know much about how they are going to be stat-wise in 4th edition, but I think it was mentioned that they will be getting a +2 to Con and a choice of a +2 to Strength or a +2 to Wisdom.

I second watching Spartacus. That show really makes me want to play a Dark Sun gladiatorial campaign. I love Crixus' honor even though he's an a-hole. I like Spartacus' change in demeanor over time. And the backstabbing and double dealing that goes on. Perfect for a Dark Sun game. The only thing I wouldn't be sure how to apply would be how they talk about the gods so much (in typical roman fashion).

Depending on the city-state, the Gods, could be the SK or they can put their faith in the Elements or even in a concept such as fate itself.
A woman in Rise and Fall throws a coin in a Urikite foutain, making a wish that the Lion of Urik can intercede in her favor...which is also nebulous: one can hope for a djinni or devil to help you, it doesn't mean you worship them.

Hang on, aren't Muls supposed to have elaborate encoded tattoos describing almost everything that happens to them? Rikus doesn't have any in that picture.

It is hard to see in that picture, but he does have some marks on his head. Sort of an under-the-skin body modification thing. There is a noticable triangular pattern in the center of his forehead.

Ah, you're right. Looks like some kind of white ink work. And here I'd just thought it was because he had his war face on.
