| #1baronspamSep 12, 2010 22:14:59 | I have had a chance to read a friend's copy of the 4e campaign guide, but do not currently have a copy of it myself. I found a map, I presume from 2nd ed, of the Try region online, which was nice, but I hade some questions about distances. I think in one of the novels there is a comment that Kled was 10 days travel from Tyr. According to the map I located, it only looks to be 30-60 miles. Is there a scale on the 4th ed map? If anyone has a copy handy could you bust out a ruler and check a couple of distances for me, say Tyr to Urik and Try to Balic. I would greatly appreciate it. |

| #7jahatch28Sep 14, 2010 8:32:47 | Please note that the Legend on the map is a bit off... the 1" mark is not actually, 1" but is closer to 3/4" .. so 1" = 25 miles is a bit off, it is more like 1" = 30 miles.... (my guess is that they had to shrink the map a bit to make it fit with a border and all and that the scale got messes up in the resizing).... so, depending on your party make up (dwarves vs elves) it could take 2 days to move 1" on the map... so kled is 5" from Tyr via roads and as much direct travel as possible, which could take 10 days... for comparison, the entire trip from Hammerfast to Winterhaven on the Nentir Vale Map at the back of the DMG1 is only a 10 day trip... so... are you going to populate the area between Tyr and Kled with the 8 to 12 locations of interest that fit on the Nentir Map (like Kelton Manor, Thunderspire Labrynth, Raven's Roost, etc)... or is the area between Kled and Tyr really just a lot of sand, mountains, stones, and dust with maybe a lost, buried ruin somewhere off the beaten path.... If you choose to make the Tyr region pretty vast and barren (which is appropriate) then it is going to take 10-20 days to get anywhere... your PCs can't just "head out from Tyr" find a dungeon, and head back in the same week... or are there a lot of hidden ruins, caves, oasis that come and go with the season that are filling the area around Tyr and Kled so that PCs can get to an area of interest and back without spending 50 gold on Survival days each ... I'm kinda up in the air.. I feel like there are lot more interesting points of darkness (probably not points of light) in the area if we were to "Zoom in" google maps style... but then again, I feel like PCs should feel that a 10 day trek across the desert is a major undertaking and the fact that they might not see another caravan or friendly NPC for days at a time should be a part of the game... - Josh |
| #8nosan2Sep 14, 2010 8:40:52 | It looks like 30 miles on the 2e map corresponds to about 70 miles on the 4e map. I've updated my site with an overlay view. www.azathought.com/darksun/2010/08/how-b... ![]() |
