How come Dregoth didn't go nuts?

Aug 02, 2013 0:15:38 From what I know, when you are a defiler who starts to become a dragon, you go through periods of rage and madness. Sort of like dragon rabbies.

From what I also know, Borys, upon being transformed into a dragon, went insane and spent a hundred years going from one corner of Athas to another and destroying stuff.

OK. But when Dregoth was killed, he was 29 level dragon. There is no mention of him going nuts. In fact, in the City by the Sea of Silt book it says that one reason why the SKs murdered him was because they were afraid that he will go insane like Borys did. Which could be interpreted that he didn't go insane yet at that point.

So how did he reach level 29 without suffering insanity?

but my guess is that,
A: dregoth wasn't a fully realized dragon, only 9/10 of a dragon, and maybe the risk of rage only becomes an issue at 100% dragon.
OR
B: Borys didnt progress thru the levels of dragonhood like the other Kings have/are, he instead used the dark lens, and the souls of thousands of slaves, and the assistance of all the other champions of rajaat to power his transformation. so the overwhelming amount of power that was shot into him in one go was responsible for fracturing his mind and turning him into an uncontrollable beast. this may explain why the other kings who still have some sense amongst them go thru the progression one level at a time. this seems like the more reasonable explanation.

Aug 10, 2013 13:00:00 I think that the simplest explanation is that only level 30th dragon is going insane. However, "defilers and preservers" declares that from the 25th through 28th levels of transformation, the dragon enters the animalistic stage, however, it can try to control it once a month. Technically, it is possible that Dregoth managed to avoid the rage every time he performed the ritual.

Jul 20, 2014 6:35:02 Dregoth never bought the dragonkings book, or the preservers and defilers book.... Dark Sun isn't known for its flawless continuity. Good research goes a long way. Another shining example, Borys was transformed into a 30th level dragon, iirc. So he shouldn't have gone crazy at all. Or he was transformed into a dragon between the levels 25-27, and spent the next century breaking Athas. Either way, too much contradictory information. The setting was broken almost as soon as it came out. But I love it. Been a fan for 20 years.
