Rikus twice tried to use the +4 magical vorpal sword The Scourge of Rkard against Hamanu, each time was a decade apart. Note that he was not completely immune to it. The first time Rikus, jumped up, swung it at his neck and a strange glowing forcefield appeared when it hit. The scourge managed to nick him though, causing a small bleeding cut. But otherwise he was ok. The second time was nearly a decade later at Ur Draxa. This time, I believe, the same thing happened, though it didn't nick him at all. At which time, Wyan offers this statement. Psionic artifacts of Athas states that of the three swords created by Rajaat, only the Silencer of Bodach is capable of harming Hamanu, as was Rajaat's design. But, this seems to be different, notice Wyan says "Use Plain Steel" Not "Use another weapon" (Though, I believe all they had was the Scourge and plain steel at the time) A friend of mine took this to mean Hamanu could only be harmed by non-magical weapons, not that only one of Rajaat's swords could harm him. It's also kind of vague. So, what if Hamanu wasn't one of the original champsions? There is support in this case for that Rajaat did implement some kind of protection, but why? Did he want Hamanu to be the one who would kill the other champions after the Cleansing Wars (how he would get him to is a matter f debate) so that the other Champions couldn't use the scourge or the scorcher against him? |

After all, one would have to be a fool to go up against a Sorcerer King without a magical weapon, right? It's also kind of vague. So, what if Hamanu wasn't one of the original champsions? Hamanu was arguably the greatest tactician among the Champions, and probably the best leader of men. In order for Rajaat's full plan to be realized, the Champions would need to be killed after they had completed their tasks. If he could have snowed Hamanu into believing that he would be allowed to live and rule at Rajaat's side, Hamanu could well have been recruited to take down the other Champions (or he might have seen through the snow job and had his own plan for taking care of Rajaat after Rajaat helped him weed out the competition). As for the protection, Hamanu or Rajaat could have decided that it was the best protection (if an Achilles Heel needed to be there at all). The other Champions would expect the same kinds of protection that they had should they come into conflict with Hamanu, and would be unprepared to bring a mundane solution. In the end, though, none of the books are canon as far as Dark Sun 4E is concerned. If you decide this would be a good include for your own Dark Sun campaign, feel free, but don't feel bound by it. |
| #3mgbeachMar 29, 2011 22:41:39 | I always kind of figured it was a bit of an "oh crap" retcon on Denning's part. I mean, he gave his lead character the most powerful weapon in the world right out of the gate, and then had to make his series last 5 books. There's a lot of sloppy writing in the Prism Pentad. It's one of those things that I enjoy because I play D&D and because it was a part of my childhood...kind of like the 3 core Dragonlance novels. Go back and read them now and they really are pretty terribly written. But they are still beloved by many, including myself. |
