I got a sack of these blue flat-laying stones from Big Lots, which are a lot like the ones Chessex sells.  I hand the characters a number of stones depending on how many quarts of water they have.  When they fill their skins, I hand them stones.  When they empty them, they hand the stones back t o me.  It works pretty well.

I don't. Create water and create food and water made it a useless exercise.

Years ago, when reading Star Wars d6, they didn't have values for a clip for a gun.  I thought that was weird and even more weird when they said to have it run out at a "dramatic moment."  I was literal back then (Briggs-Myers S) and that didn't work for me nor did I think it would work for my players.

Now, I get it.

So, at the moment, I am telling them they have enough supplies.  If they aren't able to get more supplies in the daily course of traveling, its dramatic and it fits the story, I will deal with water.

I know that probably flies in the face of Dark Sun, and I haven't dropped the idea of tracking supplies when they travel outside of the city, but I don't want to add a book keeping item to the game.  It slows it down too much, imo, and the gain isn't worth it.

I do like the bead idea from above.  If it was important, I have some of those glass tokens? beads? flat and rounded beads from Michaels and might use them to at least make it more fun and visual.

I haven't had to deal with it so far in the game.

Don't character sheets have little check boxes for water that you can mark off these days?

This is Dark Sun.  There'd be a hole in the paper where that is the first time you tried to cross a desert.  Water is horribly scarce, and when your character is wearing very little gear to begin with, it's tough to weigh yourself down with water.

I find the encumbrance rules are much more relevant in DS because of its survival focus.  After having played 4e, I see no reason why some of the rules can't be kept for tracking water, though CON damage will be harder to track in 4e.  I guess we really need some new rules for dehydration.
