I can work out it's rough base width from the maps, but anyone have a clue to how high it is?

Maybe in the book on Tyr?? may need to dig it out of my collection, hm.

I don't recall an exact height in CSoT. But looking at the side view of the Golden Tower on the book's poster map, you can make a good guess. We know from the book that the bridge that joins the Golden Tower to the Observation Tower is 75' long. Based on that, I'd put the Golden Tower at about 100'-110' high. This height includes the ramped-up gardens at its base as those contain the "dungeon levels", iirc. You could make a completely accurate measurement with a ruler and that poster-map, though.

Hm, the artwork makes it look a LOT taller than 160', it's much higher than the ziggurat, for example.

I assumed that the small entrances are 6-7 ft, so

i'm not in a position to answer this appropriately or accurately.

in the very beginning of the Crimson Legion novel, there is a scene where Tithian is training with everyone's two favorite heads, on top of some part of the palace. there may be some material there to discover how high the tower is. confer with the City State of Tyr supplement as well, as well as perhaps the pertinent chapter of Simon Hawke's Tribe of One Series, vol. 1, where Sorak first enters Tyr, as dimensions may be given there. use your best judgment. you may also consult the gladiator's handbook for material on how high the arena is, which may give you an idea of how high everything else is. The Prism Pentad, Verdant Passage, in certain sections, may also give you information.

Vote Tithian I for President, 2012!

as well as perhaps the pertinent chapter of Simon Hawke's Tribe of One Series, vol. 1

Considering your statements as to what is canon and why in that other thread, this is very funny :D

not entirely pennarin, not entirely funny.

as i discussed in my post on sources, there are indeed tiers of authority and reliability in all sources. but because one is generally bad does not entirely discount it. for instance, let us imagine that it proves impossible to give an accurate height for kalak's tower using the PP, the WJ, or even CSoT. let us then imagine that Hawke does offer us a rather exact height, and one that seems reasonable and well-thought out. if no other source but Hawke gives us this alternative, we might be well-inclined to rely on Hawke for the height of Kalak's tower.

with Hawke, i may not consult him for how his templars work (for instance, Nibenese templars, as "defilers" in his world, can, it seems, cause defiling damage when they pass by brush, e.g. in the Nomad, p. 12), or for how much gold there is in the world, or for his use of thri'kreen, etc. Hawke does nicely flesh out some areas in Tyr though, such as gambling halls and bars, and since these are often not too well discussed or elaborated upon elsewhere, and did not immediately send up any red flags upon reading (as i recall), then yes, i might consider using Hawke in these matters.

i always give you guys the benefit of the doubt by not knit-picking, i try and i think do see things from the angles of those who disagree with me. i understand why you like the way you guys did out the SKs, as do i understand how you came to such conclusions.

but it foolish to think that just because i deprecate one source, that it means it is totally useless. consider the converse, for i hold First Box to be an excellent source of information, yet it contains, in discussing wizardly magic, the infamous blood rite, which clearly is a carry over from early writings on DS. my support of First Box is not destroyed by this fact, nor does it mean i accept the blood rite. it is obviously fairly inappropriate and is not included in my games (one could discuss the blood rite elsewhere, as has already been done).

so i stand by looking to Hawke, but honestly he almost certainly would not be the best source in this matter. the PP and even, possibly, CSoT might offer some of the best stuff, although some sections of CSoT still give me the heeby jeebies.

ha. alright then
