So my original pc's in our campaign died, good ol' athas.  So now the players are starting up a new party, and one wants to be a magic user who will defile, the player has no wishes to go the preserver path.  I'm wondering how other groups have incorporated defilers in their parties.  It seems from my reading of the campaign setting that pretty much everyone would hate this character, which i think would make everybody else in the party want to kill them.  I'm not sure the specifics of the party, the group that got killed were partied together at first to get revenge on raiders that crushed their caravan, and along the way became friends and went out doing odd jobs for people, and i haven't gotten a fix on how the new group will meet.  But i'd like some ideas on how best to handle someone in the party being a defiler without having the rest of the group always wanting to kill them.

Included as self-portable ration for the Thri-Kreen, trap detector, something/one to sell for money (yay slavery),  or to cripple in order to escape from the next TPK beast ;)

On a more useful note, make sure the player designs his character with LOTS of interaction skills or types of mind control.  Another idea from my wife: give him connections; if the character is a Royal Defiler working for one of the monarchs, there's not a lot the others are going to beable to do about it without risking his/her ire.

If you have a mature group, I would let the players handle thier own pc's reaction to defiling, especially from a fellow party member.  If in the end thier pcs goals override thier revulsion of defiling then they will just let things be.  I think for the Pcs averse to defiling, working with a party member who willingly defiles often, it should be a gut wrenching decision to remain in the company of such a vile character.

In our group thier is a good aligned perserver, bard and an unaligned templar of Ablech-Ra.  The templar has yet to resort to defiling, but I have a feeling if things get tough, he won't think twice about sacrificing his allies to save his own hide or even just to succede.  In a mature group, this situation should lead to some dramatic tension and fun role playing, but not the anihilation of the party.
