Hello All,

As I can imagine, I must not be the only one who has recently stumbled upon the fact that Dark Sun is being re-released in 4th Edition.  I think I have every single 2nd edition book with the exception of the one for Elemental Priests.

My memories go back to the early 90's when Dark Sun just came out.  My friends and I were ardent fanatics who would play afternoons in the highschool library and weekends (and I mean the whole weekend).  Pretty funny how things unfold and relate to real life.  The DM is now an Engineering consultant, the Earth Cleric is a physical therapist, the fighter/psionicist is a Cop, the Rogue is in the military, and the Ranger spends most of his time playing paintball.

What I remember most fondly is the transition from traditional fantasy to Darksun.  The sense of accomplishment of having survived was incredible...the feeling of the group when it had it's first metal weapon was epic.

In any case, just saying a hello and will most likely be lurking and posting when I feel I can make a decent contribution.

Welcome and I can relate. My old group used to play every day after school and on weekends when we could. We could easily play 40+ hours a week if nothing stopped us, which is one of the only reasons I managed to get my mul gladiator to level 18 in 2e.

Oh the fun of those 90s Dark Sun adventures.  While you transitioned from traditional fantasy into Dark Sun, I started RPing with Dark Sun.  I still remember the first time I played FR or Dragonlance and being so underwhelmed.  They were the rebound relationship after the DS group broke up.

Seems like this 4ed DS should shape up nicely.  It won't be perfect but then again nothing is.

I have a serious need to rediscover Athas. Lots of old games I have fond memories of!

Their characters actually survived?

Was the DM doing his job?

...

I remember when I first got Dark Sun; it was Spring of '92.  I didn't think much of it until we played it in early August of that same year. As the DM, I remember I stayed in one whole day and read all the material front and back; I remember reading the Wanderer's guide. I even remember my players and their characters; one was a half-giant Gladiator and one was a Dune Trader (later game).  The Half-Giant ended up escaping Tyr and found himself in South Ledopolis battling giants and slaying them rather easily...The Dune Trader was the luckiest Dune Trader out there; he could litterally travel between City-States alone.  I rolled for chance of encounter and he always had none.  Of the few he did have, they were positive...As I look back, I could have done a much better job DMing, if I were to DM now; perhaps, I will DM again when 4e comes out.

Of our gaming group, the Dark Sun players were a minority; the majority were AD&D Grognards that refused to play anything 2e.  Later that year, we found some others at our school that played Dark Sun (and they loved it).  Yeah, we had the whole weekend-games.  We'd get a ride out to a city on the other side of the mountains to play at a friend's house who moved there.  I was never that into playing Dark Sun, so I never went to those whole weekend things; running it, however, I loved it and I remember during the summers, playing for a whole week.
