i can not for the life of me find a few peaces of simple info about the world of the Dark Sun setting. I never got to play it but I am very interested in the world. To be specific the things I can not find amongst the wealth of DS info (maybe because I am an idiot) are..

-The common names for the sun and moons of athas
-Do the sun and moons follow the same path as the "real world"..i.e...does the sun rise in the east set in the west.....same moon phases but 2 of them?
-How  tides and other lunar effects handled

Any help would be great

  • Sun, Ral, Guthay

  • Yes

  • Maybe there is some obscure reference to silt and tides, maybe double tides when the moons are in conjunction, but I cannot recall if it is so. If so, then many estuaries and inland silt basins would overflow during high tide, flooding the streets of nearby towns (North and South Ledopolus), cities (Balic), and ruins (Giustenal, Bodach)*.

* Every 11 years, Ral and Guthay meet in an eclipse. This is described in the Revised Boxed Set. I think Abbey in her novels also refers to that as a period when the underground spring waters beneath Urik overflow from the tide and inundate the city and surrounding farm lands.

Didn't some folk think that Ral or Guthay (dunno which is larger) is actually a gas giant and Athas orbits it?

That idea floated around the DS mailing list as an alternative. To add a twist to the "Alien world has two moons" cliche.

Also on the mailing list, I found where someone was creating the Moon Freeware that Grummore was talking about (or perhaps a similar project). "Merchant's Calendar" But I can't find a download anywhere on the web. It was fun poking around year 2000 web pages with their "1 meg" mail attatchment download limits and 16 color graphics for modem downloading.

In the year 2000 ... there was a movie called 'Pitch Black', so the gas-giant/moon alternative was also derivative in nature.  Unless the Society for Creative Anachronism are dressing as Thri-Kreen now,

It would be appreciated.

I did find a web application, that was posted by Ignatius over at the GiantITP forums, that could do one, but I wasn't happy with it.  Here's the link: www.eightcharacters.com.au/calendar/Merc...

Here is the app that made it: www.eightcharacters.com.au/calendar/

Original GiantITP post: www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t...

My problems with the calendar are:

1) Doesn't display seasonal information (Hoard through Sedulous are High Sun, Fortuary through Hexameron are Sun Descending, and Morrow through Anabasis are Sun Ascending. )

2) Doesn't display astrological information, which would be nice, and

3) The Ivory Triangle seems to suggest that that the 1st of a month should always be a Oneday.  It is always a Oneday for the first three months, until one of the 5 day festivals messes all that up.  It would seem, in order to keep that up, you would have to lose a sixday every festival.  The calendar maker can't account for that.  But if you like the calendar that way, well, there it is.

The Merchant Calendar is a small-windowed application in which you can type a year and day and see the positions and phases of the moons for that day, and learn the Athasian name of the month and year for that date, and from there allows you to see forward or backward in time with a click. It also helps as an automatic converter of King's Ages years into Free Tyr years, so FY -104 would be the _ _ th year of the _ _ _ th King's Age.

I dont know why, but there is some sort of %C2%A0 that appear at the end. Remove it. It should work.

Sorry for the delay!
