If you had to live under the rule of a SK

which one would you choose?  Rules of the discussion- You have to live in one of the cities, but you can't pick Tyr, at least not after the fall of Kalak.  We will assume that you are a middle class person, perhaps a craftsman of some sort.  The life of a slave is miserable anywhere, and being noble greatly complicates the question.

Strangle, I think I might pick Urik in the above circumstances.  There is a great deal of social pressure to conform, which could get to be a drag after a while, but considering how nasty life can be in most of Athas Urik has the advantages of being very safe, clean, extreemly low on crime, orderly, and well managed.  You are likely to always have enough to eat and drink.  You probably don't even have to lock your door at night.  And unlike Balic's faux democracy, Urik has a meritocracy of sorts.  One who really does well and displays excellence can raise in station.  Yes, Hamanu is in total control, but at least you know where you stand.  There is no play politics to confuse things.

As a second choice, I think I would go with Balic, just becuase they have olives, and that counts for alot.  But in Balic's political climate I think I would take great pains to NOT advance in station.  I think one would lead a happier life there saying firmly in the craftsman class.  Balic is probably much more fun on the weekend.  It has better theater, art, culture, etc, but it is also probably more plagued with crime.  You are more likely to catch a knife in the ribs and you most definately lock and bar the door once you close up the shop.  Plus you have to put up with wind blown silt storms.  Still, its a tough choice.

What does anyone else think about it?

Hamanu for the safe urban setting. Unless I was a woman, then it would be Nibenay. I would be such a dirty Templar Lady.

If I was the outdoor sort of person Gulg.

Revolutionnary, maybe Raam.

Never Eldaarich, Balic or Draj.

Nibenay is a clever, clever SK. Gotta' love his style....

Urik could work, especially if you were a potter.  Personally, I like Nibenay.  Seems like you could a be a scholar or middling Student of the Way without making too many ripples.
