Incorrect map scale

The map that comes with the Campaign Setting indicates that 1" equals 25 miles, but the little marker thing above it with the 25, 50, and 75 markers, isn't three inches long; it's just under 2 and 1/2.

So, what gives? Is it better to go with 1" equals 25 miles, and 'compress' the world a little, or to go by the marker thingy, or another method?

Haha. Good catch.

I bet the map was drawn "to scale", with the measure being exactly 1 inch. Then somebody in their art department re-scaled the map smaller to fit printing sizes.

I would take the measure on the map as the "real" thing... although exact distances are not all that important. The map is really just a cartoon, and the distances are probably all approximate anyways.

What the hell! I just noticed this. Foul! Foul I say!

Anyway, like the above comment says, use the scale on the map, and ignore the 1" bit. Or consult Traveling the Windswept Roads.

Still...boo! Hiss!

Or...the map is the best that Tyr's Geographic Society can produce, and teh desrt is so vast and confusing, that after travelling for 25 miles in a given direction, it's easier and easier to become lost, and so after travelling 50 miles from any settlement, the map is less accurate.  Hence the inconsistency on the map scale.  It's a reflectuion of the difficulty of navigating the wasteland.

Or it's an editing mistake and you caught it...either way.

I think I remember them saying they intentionally shrunk the region, but I'm not going to be able to look for a citation, at the moment.

In either case, it's easy enough to alter for a home campaign, as you guys have already discussed.

Personaly i think the Map region is to small and have increased its size 10 fold.
