| #1outlaw68Jun 28, 2009 0:26:37 | In playtesting some 4th ed material I have converted, it does require the use of the 2nd ed books, as the conversion is fluff lite.. So far I have a rough (and partially incomplete) PHB and DMG.. monsters I am still converting, but I am developing two Monstrous Compendiums at once. Some of the material has come from these boards (I have a list of credit in the front of the PHB) and I have also converted huge amounts of material my self, to make it all fit together.. I am very interested in seeing what other people think of what I have developed for the game. So if you are interested Please PM you email address and I can forward word documents to you (or PDF if you prefer) and I would love to hear any suggestions, additions and alterations that could/should be made. |

I just sent you what i have so far, Monsters will be coming very soon, I am hoping to have large amounts converted over the weekend, but at the moment i am neck deep in some rules idea's to make the game nice and gritty ![]() |
| #4ishan_whJun 30, 2009 15:26:09 | Hey outlaw I´m interested in seen what you have converted... my mail is karadoc@hotmail.com let me know.. eager to see your templar class if any hehehe |
| #5outlaw68Jun 30, 2009 20:32:57 | Hey outlaw I´m interested in seen what you have converted... Sent! Any feedback is most welcome.. i want to fine tune it, make it a solid option for people wanting to play dark sun! Oh.. and i went a little bit left of centre to make templars.. there is no single Templar class anymore, more classes that are considered templars in the route I took. |
| #6outlaw68Jul 01, 2009 2:41:24 | ok.. so i have done a bit more in the way of house rules designed for Dark Sun (some more rituals, critical hits, morale etc), i am also updating the regional benefits section in the Dark Sun Player's Guide, basically making it a 4th ed thing that a shoddy drag and drop of the 3rd ed ones (basically i was going to use them as a base, but didn;t get around to starting the alterations till today.. so probably best just to ignore that section for now :embarrass ) I will email the updates soon, i am just doing a bit of tidying up on them, much of it is still in a fairly early development stage too.. they are useable, but they will more than likely need some tweaking to balance them out. |
| #7vizierJul 01, 2009 6:52:22 | I like it when people are brutally honest with me so here goes: It's VERY rough. First thing you should do is run spell check. I am horrible with typos so I know how you feel. Now about the content. I dont like the inclusion of basically all the races from regular 4th ed. In my game I limited races to all the races listed in the Dark Sun boxed set then I included Eldarin (rare elf tribe) and Muls (half orc) and the easiest one is Half Giant (goliath). As far as classes go I came to similar conlusions with Paladins and Avengers being part of the Templars. I do not think that most clerics would be elementalists. Most Clerics would worship Sorc Kings and be part of the Templars. Just some constructive crits. I was able to use some of your stuff as setting filler in my Maptool game! I like how you referenced other published books, makes searching for stuff very easy. |
| #8outlaw68Jul 01, 2009 7:54:55 | I like it when people are brutally honest with me so here goes: Thanks for the input! Yes, i suck with typos, and i apologise in advance to any one reading. I will endeavour to get that fixed (also please keep in mind i am Australian, we do spell some things differently to Americans! - but yes there will definitely by typo's, i get an idea for something and i start typing at about a million words a minute.. :embarrass ) My original idea with clerics was to make them all elementalists, and then when i thought about the Avengers and Paladins fitting the Templar role, it made sense to me that Clerics could take that path, the Templar Cleric path could use some more development.. which i will definitely look into to... i am more than willing to hear any ideas. As for the races, i would not allow the races listed under the extremely rare unless a player hd a very good reason (as they are assumed extinct on the planet).. but i do sort of think the pristine tower can leave the door slightly ajar for them if a DM is feeling generous. Perhaps i should expand that bit to include the disadvantages of playing such a race (such as the fact they are more or less freaks, and have no race to call their own). I have altered the Eldarin slightly too, i think it makes more sense for them to be mostly unaware of their attachment to the Feywild (as most of the planet is mostly unaware of the realms existence) I am glad you were ale to use some of it too! |
| #9outlaw68Jul 07, 2009 20:12:52 | Hey All, A link to PDFs - i will still email out as they update, unless you no long wish to receive them of course! http://www.enworld.org/forum/4e-fan-creations-house-rules/258775-dark-sun-anyone.html outlaw |
| #10deichgrafJul 12, 2009 6:57:06 | hm... I won't be able to playtest your rules, but I might be able to help with the typos... I will take some time though, 'cause of my job... I will look into the rules, but I can't give tested opinions, just guesses from insight and knowledge of running DS games for 6 years... Hope that will help anyway, but thanks in advance for undertaking this project... |
| #11outlaw68Jul 12, 2009 7:36:00 | hm... All help is good help! Unfortunately I am not is a position to do much playtesting either, I have just moved city and have no group here.. it is why i have so much time to do these conversions! But please do read, help with typos will be good, i run spell check, but it doesn't pick them all up, and i am terrible at typing ![]() Also, help with flavour is great, i own all the dark sun books from 2nd ed, and i have everything from Athas.org, but in my opinion getting the flavour of the setting right is more important than having the balance absolutely perfect (although balance is important, imho, it comes second to flavour) |
| #12logainJul 20, 2009 8:56:20 | Hello I'm interested, but unable to open your files... |
| #13outlaw68Jul 20, 2009 19:46:22 | Hello I am more than happy to email them to you, if you want to PM me your email address I can send them as PDF's or Docs. |
| #14shrykull_dupJul 26, 2009 1:53:52 | You guys may call me a heretic but I never moved beyond 2nd edition. Though there are some things I like about 3rd, there are many I miss about 2nd. Not to mention that fact that I would have to run out and buy new rulebooks with every edition, as it's been said many times before. And I DID buy a 3E DMG and Player's Handbook, but I won't go any further than that. It would be interesting to compare editions and see how many people/customers TSR/Wizards lost from edition to edition. Remember the uproar over the transition from 2nd to 3rd? And although a lot of people said "You are saying that same thing people said when the transition to 1st to 2nd happened!" I'm sure lots of people stopped buying the new books. I know some myself. Once Wizards took over, they fully supported the idea of making new editions every so often. So they could make it like Magic: The Moneysucker (which I have played in the past, and may still, not sure) in which you would constantly have to buy new sets to keep up. |

Well.. thanks for bumping my thread.. i guess?? This is more than a little bit off topic though. This thread was created specifically to let people know about my conversion, and for feedback on it, weather you moved past 2nd edition or not, and what you think of WOTC, 3rd and 4th ed are completely irrelevant. Please don; introduce edition war nonsense onto the Dark Sun boards, it has been largely free of it so far. |
| #16ZardnaarJul 26, 2009 16:25:11 | I can have a look for you, but cant really platest it for you. Our group has shrunk to 3 people which makes it hard for 4th eds 5 person group assumption, and we don't really play D&D any edition that much any more- kinda burned out on 3.5 and didn't like 4th ed enough to run a long term campaign (made it to level 7). I can give you feedback on the mechanics and the like. My email is Zardnaar@yahoo.com. |

| #20ZardnaarAug 02, 2009 3:21:41 | I've got them but haven't had a chance to look through it yet. 91 pages as well and thats just the players stuff!!!! You've misspelt my name in the credits:P Slaves are cheap it seems. Maybe bump the pice up to 50-100 Cp for a basic human and go from there? Classes that use weapons seem a bit gimped in your system compared to a standard 4th ed PHB character. They either hit less often of deal les damage than PHB weapons. Maybe tweak other classes that don't use weapons by taking a healing surge off them. I would also probably treat all inferior materials the same mechanically. |

Weapons being weak is a big thing for me, I will work on improving.. that is something i would really like to balance out, hopefully with out having to strip a healing surge of the casting classes. (Healing Surges are something of a premium with the threat of dehydration etc). |
| #22ZardnaarAug 02, 2009 4:57:21 | What have you actually used form me if I'm in the credits? Not to worried if I've posted it here go for it. Not to sure how to make the weapons weaker. maybe have them deal less damage but gain +1 to hit. Wooden sword is easy to swing, but doesn't hit that hard. Basic wooden/bone/obsidian longsword +4 to hit, 1d6 damage. Or you could give the weapon classes an extra healing surge or something. |
| #23outlaw68Aug 02, 2009 5:53:05 | What have you actually used form me if I'm in the credits? Not to worried if I've posted it here go for it. I think i may have used some ideas you posted a while back for class powers, although i think they may have been converted into racial feats rather than actual racial powers, I can't say I remember for sure! I like that idea with weapons.. lighter (and weaker) material makes then easier to swing, but they do less damage.. |
| #24ZardnaarAug 02, 2009 6:17:43 | I don't really see how using an inferior material makes it hard to hit with, but it would be harder to deal damage compared to metal I suppose. Some of the Maori weapons they have here made out of stone were quite nasty. Also you could treat them the same as PHB weapons but give them a -1 to hit or something when fighting opponents in metal armor. Theres no real drawback as such using "inferior" weapons if everyone else has them as well. Or give the opponent resist 1 for light metal armor, resist 2 for medium metal armor or resist 3 for heavy metal armor. Or damage reduction 1/2/3 whatever its called these days. In 3.5 the houserule we used was -1AC, +1 dex bonus on any armor made out of inferior materials. I quite like your Cure wounds rituals but I suspect they are in effect free healing at higher levels due to the amount of money high level 4th ed characters have if you follow the guidelines in the DMG. I assume the Sorcerer Kings and The Dragon are going to resemble their 2nd ed counterparts? The Dragon level 30 solo, and the SKs would be level 21-24 (29 for Dregoth). Avangion and Dragon are now epic destinys requiring multiclass feats to qualify for them? NPC Dragons would be elites and solos depending on how powerful they are? |

Yes i have done a little study on Maori weapons (as they can be viewed as art - I studied Art History at university and applied most of that study to ancient and tribal weapons and how they can be viewed as art), but the inferior material can also be demonstrated by putting something like a Northern Australian Aboriginal Spear, next to a European/Asian Crafted Spear with a metal tip etc, the Aboriginals did little more than sharpen wood (and create barbs for hunting/fishing) and they break very easily, but having said that the Aboriginal Weapon was not really intended for anything like warfare (they were to an extent, but their primary use was hunting and punishment) Using a weapon made of inferior material like the aboriginal spear against an armoured target results in it being pretty much useless unless a weak spot is found.. The Cure Wounds ritual are twofold in there usefulness in my campaign, they can be used by a non-divine healer, making for convenient healing within a party, and they are very useful when I use my critical hit charts (Which i have as an optional rule in my DMG), Plus another optional rule in my DMG drastically reduces the players cash flow, getting rich just isn't something that happens that easily on Athas. |
| #26ZardnaarAug 02, 2009 23:41:36 | Got your new email with the updated stats. Theres a Psion on DDi now? You've done alot of extensive work, as I'm not to sure if people here realise how much efforts gone into it. |

You've done alot of extensive work, as I'm not to sure if people here realise how much efforts gone into it. Yep, the Psion is in last months Dragon Mag, it, like the monk is a preview with only one of the builds, but it is very cool (Instead of Encounter Powers, they get points to boost at-wills, so they work like an encounter power). And, yea, I have put a lot of work into them, but it was really done primarily as a personal thing, I just thought some people on here might get some use out of it too, converting stuff is almost as much a hobby of mine as playing the game is! |
| #28ZardnaarAug 02, 2009 23:52:22 | I play mostly Star Wars Saga now and I'm working on some game material. So far I've done 50 pages and thats been an effort. You've got close to 200. Sending you a PM. |
