Well, A long, long time ago, when Rajaat was stomping around under Ral and Guthay, I did a lot of art for Horrors of the Desert - a web project detailing all the mosters of Athas before Wizards resurrected the world.

Mar 05, 2011 20:15:55 I was just thinking yesterday that it would be so great if the old guys from before the forum change would start posting again. Some really awesome ideas were thrown around back then. Welcome back!

Mar 07, 2011 9:03:18 Sadly, not so much. Real life dropped a few bombs on me in the last couple years, causing me to deal with a few things closer to home than Athas. Slowly getting back into the swing of things, though.

Looks like they finally breathed life back into the desert world. General consensus is...?

Consensus? Like that they brought the setting back and its not bad as far as 4e goes. Would rather have seen it come out in 3.5, but beggars can't be choosers.

Mar 07, 2011 19:39:11 Guess that's true. I finally went off the rails as far as DnD's concerned and just use my own system. The Dragon's still alive, there's all kind of nastiness around, but I've mostly been gaming in a friend's world (the Ice Age pics on my website).

Even that's been rare, though. Glad to see the community's still here, along with some familiar faces, and glad Wizards finally decided to bring back the greatest creation of TSR. :D

Consensus seems to be very positive. 4E had a bit of a kid-friendly view of many traditional settings. They didn't go that route with Dark Sun. By and large it is a fair treatment of what made the setting special. It is exceptionally well done in many places and even the arguably low points are pretty darn good. There have been a lot of people playing Dark Sun again. It is without question their most successful campaign setting launch and is seeing support in Dragon and Dungeon as a result.

We had a season of D&D Encounters and I am one of the admins for the organized play campaign, bringing Ashes of Athas to large conventions (and some smaller ones).

Also I plan on loading up the rest of the images at some point - these were what I considered the best of the lot, or at least the ones that were starting to get beat up in my portfolio.

Agreed. DS 4e is a very well made Campaing Setting, but the system didn't catch me. The system is not that simple as it looks like at first glance (to build a character without the character builder softwar is a nightmare.)

I would rather Wizard could keep 4e and make a paralel product line based on d20 system (much like we had D&d and AD&D in the past).

A 3.75e would definitelly work for me (just take a look at Amazon and u will see the the Pathefinder is seeling more than 4e, and Pathfinder only power-up the classes and fix some but not all the problens of 3e, such as a base defense bonus progression --- like 1/2 class's BAB --- along with keeping armor and shield AC bonus).

My tip: If you have to choose just 1 product to buy... buy only the DS Campaing Setting, but stivk to 3.5, Pathfinder or your own homebrew system.
