| #1JohnLynchSep 24, 2008 0:58:13 | If Dark Sun is converted to 4e there's a 90% chance that there's going to be changes to incorporate 4e races and classes. Now either we'll see them make as few changes as possible (like Eberron is reported to be), or they'll make big sweeping changes (like Forgotten Realms has). This thread is for fans to try to include as many 4e races and classes as possible in Dark Sun while keeping as close to the old lore as possible. For this we'll use the confirmed PHB1 and PHB2 races which are: * Elf (included in original Dark Sun) * Eladrin * Half-Elf (included in original Dark Sun) * Dwarf (included in original Dark Sun) * Human (included in original Dark Sun) * Dragonborn * Tiefling * Halfling (included in original Dark Sun) * Gnome * Goliath * Half-Orc * Shifter For the classes the confirmed ones from PHB1 and PHB2 are: * Cleric * Paladin * Wizard (included in original Dark Sun) * Warlock * Fighter (included in original Dark Sun) * Ranger (included in original Dark Sun) * Rogue (included in original Dark Sun) * Druid (included in original Dark Sun) * Barbarian (included in original Dark Sun) * Sorcerer (included in original Dark Sun) * Bard (included in original Dark Sun) As you can see so far the only new classes are cleric and paladin (which there's a chance won't be included) along with Warlock. Races, however, provide a stickier problem. |
| #2JohnLynchSep 24, 2008 1:03:19 | My conversion is that Paladins will take the place of Templars while Clerics won't be included. Warlocks will be included as people who make pacts with powerful and otherworldly sources. Eladrin and Gnomes I think will be incorporated as races that fled to the Feywild. However due to a catastrophe they fled back to Athas where they are now struggling to survive. Dragonborn become Pterrans. Goliath become Half-Giants. Tieflings are ex-slaves who made were the first to make pacts with otherworldly beings. However they failed to fulfil their end of the pact and so were cursed. Half-Orcs were able to hide among the humans during the purge and still exist to this day due to the strength of the Orc blood over human blood. Shifters eventually came about when lycanthropes mated with humans after the race purge. By replacing Dark Sun races with 4e ones and having tiefling and shifters come about after the racial purge, the number of Champions gets to stay the same. How do others think the races and classes might be incorporated? |

Note this is a band aid idea until either WoTC design Psionics or someone else does. 4th ed classes are alot of work to desgn. Might want to rename Cleric as a Templar and change the power source to elemental. Strength based clerics are war templars, wisdom based laser clerics are support templars in addition to NPC templars. If you rename the Clerics as Templars you may ewant to design a Cleric class. 4th ed clerics to me seem beter suited mechanically to represent Templars than a true Darksun Cleric IMHO. As for the planes theres a retcon you can already use. Dregoths attempt at ascension damaged the planes as Athasians know them. I could see the elemental chaos and astral sea being used to replace the old Athasian planes and that way you could retcon paraelemental clerics out of the game. I would probably keep the rest of the 4th ed cosmology away from Athas. I would include the following classes with suggested tweaks * Cleric (Change power source to Elemental) * Paladin ( Renamed to Templar, change power source to elemental. change fluff about loss of mechanics like secular authority) * Wizard (included in original Dark Sun) * Warlock (reflavoured as Psion) * Fighter (included in original Dark Sun) * Ranger (included in original Dark Sun) * Rogue (included in original Dark Sun) Probably make the Gladiator a paragon path (renamed Pit Fighter??) Some of the classes need a bit more work such as Clerics which could have pact powers like Warlocks. |
| #4jonplaywuSep 24, 2008 14:47:23 | * Elf (included in original Dark Sun) * Half-Elf (included in original Dark Sun) * Dwarf (included in original Dark Sun) * Human (included in original Dark Sun) * Dragonborn (Renamed to Dray) * Halfling (included in original Dark Sun) * Mul - (new rules) * Thri Kreen - (new rules) * Tiefling (BANNED) Defiler = as in orginal boxed set w/ defiler being more powerful clerics = change type to elemental can worship either dragonking(Templar) or element (cleric) essential re-skin of existing rules paladin = as above Trader = (Yes I listed it) new social class with warlord capabilities Bard = New Rouge paragon path/Build No need to make Gladiator reskin, fighter just as good if not better. Aszsload of new weapons and rules for cost vs item composition chart Oh....Psionics...yeah.....well.....I just kinda took atwill abilities (20) and made up a wild talent table and allowed all the Pc's to have one for free as an encounter. Psionics are unavailable to PC's until the rules come out. Easier than forcing the Warlock to be one, when he's really a blast and a psionic is the ultimate controller. Jon |
| #5ZardnaarSep 24, 2008 20:04:55 | * Elf (included in original Dark Sun) I made the Psion a striker as they've never ereally been a good controller IMHO. They were great one vs one in 2nd ed and 3.5 but they don't tend to have the area of effect powers that wizards in particular can do and don't even compare that well to Clerics and Druids. |
| #6jonplaywuSep 25, 2008 12:45:45 | mebbe......but I always thought that a Psion would be able to get into your mind and make you do stuff, I've been reading the prism pentad and the way theu illustrate psionics appeals to be more than the 3e version of the psion |
| #7kojiro_jamesNov 22, 2009 19:50:12 | They'll ruin Dark Sun like they ruined Forgotten Realms. Wizards soils everything it touches now. D&D is more like a tactical wargame than anĀ RPG these days, which is ironic considering its origins. I will not support this product just like I have not supported anything else from 4e. |
