| #1ascottbayJun 25, 2010 16:46:02 | While Dark Sun will be rolling out a setting-specific Creature Catalog that I'm looking forward to, I've noticed a few monsters in the MM3 that might be interesting on Athas. I skipped the MM2 and even sold my MM1 after subscribing to Insider (I love building my own monsters 90% of the time) - but I recently picked up the MM3, and I'm definitely planning to use some of it with my Dark Sun campaign. Do you agree (or disagree) with my choices? Was there anything from the MM3 that you yourself plan to use in Dark Sun? Arcanians: They're wizards who tried to draw too much power for a spell and ended up being consumed and reanimated by it. That definitely belongs on Athas! Cave Fishers: Are perfect for annoying PCs that aren't picky about their shelter. Forsaken: Created by the death of gods that could not return their essence to the Astral Sea, these could be used in a plot about gods that were killed in whatever event has caused divine power to be absent on Athas. Gargoyle, Obsidian: Monsters made of the useful material! Howler: Feeding on fear, these could be excellent psionic monsters for Athas. Imix's Cultists: Might make good elemental priests of fire. Meenlocks: Are also crazy mutant-like monsters and easy to give psionic flavor to. Nagpa: Their attacks might fit as defiling spells. Ogremoch's Cultists: As Imix, but earth. Thri-kreen: More variety of Thri-kreen can't hurt. |

| #3silverbullet5774Jun 25, 2010 19:09:17 | I will have my MM3 tomorrow and I will add to this list. I am using giant ants, fire beetles, and ankhegs from MM1 and MM2 so far, though I havent given everything a thorough look through yet. Maybe we should compile a list across all three Monster Manuals of the most fitting monsters for Dark Sun from already published materials and get it stickied! |
| #4commissarJun 25, 2010 19:35:10 | They seriously brought the Nagpa back in MM3? That's pretty darn cool. |
| #5Duke5150Jun 26, 2010 5:08:42 | Primordials make great elemental lords, if you use elemental lords in your game. I plan to build elemental cults around them. |
| #6PennarinJun 26, 2010 14:20:32 | Anything elemental with such titles as Lord or Prince is a big no-no for me. I was thrilled on how they pulled off the first primordials' personalities and motivations, even the name primordial. The MM3 primordials are sillier, flavor-wise, only because they have an hint about them of being...people. |
| #7Duke5150Jun 26, 2010 17:59:52 | Fluff can be changed to be what you want it to be and you don't need to call them lords or anything like that. I just think as high-epic level bosses, primordials are a nice option for darksun. I'v been working on the "GreatOne", as an obsidian primordial in the deadlands. |
| #8PennarinJun 26, 2010 18:50:34 | Hopefully the Elemental Chaos will stay that...a Chaos, a mixture of all elements. That way in DS we can present a unified front for that plane, while also using MM3's one-element elementals. So the Chaos is full of everything and anything elemental. It's IMO better than water vs earth vs air vs fire, vs all the other paraelements, they too fighting among themselves. |

Maybe Ral or Guthay was made of the coral they used. He awakes becose of some spell. And that moon is psionic. Entire populations go mad. Only our heroes can stop it. Mind if I steal that idea? |

And instead of killing it, you put it back to sleep at zero hp. So you get to have the adventure, fight the boss and keep both the moons. Personally, the moment I saw Allabar, I thought of FF9. So I don't think I'll be using him in darksun. Eberron, YES! But not darksun. |
| #11PennarinJun 27, 2010 13:26:16 | Final Fantasy 9 must have some similar boss. |
| #12Duke5150Jun 27, 2010 17:36:55 | Yes, in final fantasy 9, you stood on a cliff and fought a small planet that comes to eat your face. It's called Osma and it's a pretty brutal fight. Nothing compared to what you fight in ff12. But for back then, it was the shiz. Just something that made me chuckle when I saw Allabar. |
| #13PennarinJun 27, 2010 20:05:55 | MM3 has (under another name) a Skeksis. They botched the art, but you can tell, even the text supports it. |
| #14ascottbayJun 27, 2010 21:51:58 | Chamberlain! Mmhmm...! Dark Sun: Champions attempt to exterminate a number of races, wielding powerful magic that uses lifeforce as fuel. Dark Crystal: Skeksis attempt to exterminate Gelflings; they like extracting the essence of other creatures. ![]() Just don't give the last surviving gnome girl a pair of wings. Even if that was some of the cutest dialog ever. "I don't have wings!" "Of course not. You're a boy." (By the way, someone pointed out in another thread that the Nagpa art has a purple crystal near its foot.) |
| #15foreverslayerJun 27, 2010 21:59:11 | Chamberlain! Mmhmm...! Yes it does. |
| #16AegeriJul 05, 2010 0:59:25 | MM3 has (under another name) a Skeksis. They botched the art, but you can tell, even the text supports it. The art has a purple crystal behind it and a small hand that looks suspiciously like a dead Gelflings as well. They were 100% certain of what they were doing there. |
