Hey guys, i'm soon to start a DS campaign with a bunch of friends. Due to the nature of arcane magic within DS, is there a class that captures the feel of playing a mage?

The mage?

Well, yes. But is arcane magic not seen as defiling and evil within DS, therefore making a caster far more difficult to play?

I guess what I should have asked is whether there is a DS equivalent, using psionic powers or otherwise. The Battlemind is a defender with psionic abilities it seems.

The Psion is the Psionic Controller, if that's what you're asking.

You can still play arcane characters.  Not all arcane characters are defilers, although much of the populace see arcane magic as the cause of the state of affairs.  Arcane characters that do not want people to know they are arcane hide their casting as other forms, such as psionics.  Defilers don't always defile, but when they do it is very apparent that they are casting magic.

Psions (controllers) are looked upon as psionic mages by some, so that could be an option if you so choose.

Wizard or sorcerer but whether you defile or preserve you should be wary of who sees you cast arcane spells.  Maybe you should discuss the preserver path to arcane magical power on Athas with your Dm.  There are other ways to learn arcane magic and becoming a mage in Dark Sun with out defiling.  Of course you always have the choice to change your mind.
