Dec 14, 2009 13:54:06 Greetings - I had never heard of Dark Sun until WotC announced it would be the next 4e published setting. It looks interesting, and I'm planning to set a campaign in the universe - except I'm having trouble finding solid details online.

What's the best source of information? Is it worth trying to find old copies of the source material from 2e to learn more about the setting? The Dark Sun wiki is very light on information (I learned more about the setting from wikipedia), and most of the other material I've come across is fanfiction. Are there any good supplement books from earlier editions that are heavier on details and lighter on mechanics? I'm looking for something similar to "Forge of War" or "Five Nations" in Eberron - 'history' books that can transcend rule changes.

If there are specific Dark Sun novels that would be a good intro to the setting, I'd be interested in that as well. I mostly want to immerse myself in the setting a bit so that I can have some material written well before the 4e books come out in August.

The Prism Pentad series, which is currently be reprinted

The Tribe of One series

The Chronicles of Athas series

You could also check out Athas.org and get their 3.5e stuff. It has lrge sections of background which can be used in any edition game.

The Box set has a pure fluff document in it known as the Wanderer's Journal (there is also the Chronicle from a later box set). I know that both exist in PDF formats. Plus several of the early Dark Sun products had short stories included, some are better then others.

Depending on where you live, used book stores may also have some (or tons) of old Dark Sun novels (there's one near here that had a couple of book cases dedicated to D&D novels, with quite a few shelves occupied by Dark Sun novels. I guess that's the advantage of living in a larger town in the Southern US).
