no dragons?

Feb 02, 2011 12:02:30 Because that is just how it is. In Athas, a dragon is not a thing born, it is a thing made. A powerful arcane spellcaster who defiles enough begins a transformation into a dragon. All of the sorcerer kings have begun their transformation. But, to dote, only one spellcaster has completed it: Borys, now known as the Dragon of Tyre, who is (unknown to Athas's general population) the warden of Rajaat's prison.

Feb 05, 2011 7:36:06 Borys of Ebe, 13th Champion, Butcher of Dwaves, Who orchestrated the rebellion against Rajaat, lead the Champions in their betrayal, and who (I believe) Volunteered to be the first one to go through the complete ritual to become a Dragon in order to make sure Rajaat didn't come back. Upon completing the process (which was done quickly, instead of slowly over time), he went mad (I think, but can't find the source on short notice) for centuries I believe, which caused the rest of the Sorceror Kings to rethink their completion of the ritual.

After a while Borys calmed down, and became the Warden of Rajaat's Prison

The rest of the SKs were content to remain at their various degrees of progress through the ritual (10 steps), as each step did grant them more power. Also, because each were wary and distrustful of the others, seeking to advance a step in the ritual might cause the others to believe that he/she was seeking more power in order to perhaps turn on the others...

Some time Later, Dregoth, the 3rd Champion, Ravager of Giants (Not listed in the original campaign setting, but detailed later in City by the Silt Sea), sought to go through with the completion of his ritual. The other SKs ganged up on him and slew him, which really pissed him off. See City by the Silt sea for more info there.

Anyway, there are a lot of reasons that there is only 1 Dragon. Of course, even from the beginning of the game setting, it was possible for Defilers to go through their own rituals to become Dragons, and that process is available in 4e (through Epic Destinies I believe), so there very well could be other dragons. But without the effect that gave Sorceror Kings their powers, they probably won't stand up to Borys of Ebe, 1 on 1.
