| #1PennarinNov 02, 2009 13:04:04 | What do you think? Images by Jason Engle. The first one's Mirage, the other's called Under a Dark Sun...
|
| #2big_goonNov 02, 2009 14:25:40 | These pictures aren't new. Jason Engle's an excellent artist, his style is very unique and he very much enjoys drawing for WotC. He's done so both for D&D and Magic. He's very good at drawing demons, warriors, knights, samurai, mages, etc... all very appropriate for Lord of the Rings or Forgotten Realms. High Fantasy. I wouldn't mind seeing these types of pictures for DS, but would rather a more abstract or rugged-feel instead. Maybe Jason can do it, but I haven't seen it yet. He is contracted extensively by WotC. |
| #3PennarinNov 02, 2009 15:13:24 | I know of him and his work. The post was about the above two pics for which I have no dates of creation. Since at least one is about Dark Sun, and usually paid artists don't draw stuff they haven't been paid for, I thought the pic could be for an official DS thing...hence 4e DS 2010. |
| #4big_goonNov 02, 2009 15:26:06 | Yup. Jason submitted the Under A Dark Sun picture to his deviantArt account in 2007. Supposedly it's in a Dragon Magazine - not sure which one though. |
| #5StarFyre2007Nov 02, 2009 18:27:07 | Dragon 351, page 32... The WOrld Serpent Inn and other settings ..page 32 talks about Dark Sun...
|
| #6methvezemNov 02, 2009 18:39:43 | Many of Engle current DS art, which have appeared in the Paizo's articles in Dungeon and Dragon magazines from 3.5 ed, are inspired by Brom's original artworks. For exemple, in 'Under A Dark Sun' above, the line of people in the background bears quite a resemblance to Brom's cover for Slave Tribes. |
| #7ZardnaarNov 02, 2009 23:17:33 | Both seem OK. The first one seems to be generic sci fi/fantasy desert wandered while the 2nd is a bit more Dark Sunny. |
| #8PennarinNov 03, 2009 0:12:00 | I imagine the second one's hazy atmosphere to be what you'd experience near the Silt Sea or a basin when winds pick up. And the photo-realistic dunes receding in the background are reminescent of the photography in Lynch's Dune, as if for once a desert could be something else than a deadly or sterile place...as if it could be a character in its own right, even a god. You got that feeling from Lynch's Arakis desert scenes. |
| #9ZardnaarNov 03, 2009 0:48:52 | I almost mentioned Dune about the first picture as it ocould easily be a Dune scene as opposed to a DS scene. Recently finished Hunters of Dune and Sandworms of Dune which I enjoyed. Thought they would really suck. |
| #10Raddu76Nov 04, 2009 23:13:29 | On a slight tangent... I contacted Brom on the Facebook...I sent an e-mail to WotC Baker and WotC Rodney....we'll see Post #1 |
| #11teobaldoNov 05, 2009 5:22:10 | So Brom would be in if Wizards asked him to... Great news, we can all but hope (and maybe point Brom's comment to the creators of 4th ed. DS) |
| #12lastardNov 05, 2009 7:02:43 | From what I've seen so far, the 4e artwork seems like a cross between computer game art, manga and the very early D&D Dragonlance stuff. But then, I've mainly seen the rule books. Has anybody got handy links to examples? |
| #13PennarinNov 05, 2009 10:55:30 |
The prevalent D&D style changed after 3e Eberron came out. 4e has mainly adapted that style. For links, check the WotC site, the art archive. Choose any generic 4e book, like Martial Power. |
| #14teobaldoNov 10, 2009 16:50:21 | more from Rich Baker about Brom's involvement in 4th ed. : " I love Brom's stuff (he did an outstanding cover for my novel Condemnation) and I'd like to see what he'd do with it, but it's not my call. I'm not the art director, and there are a few issues at work -- scheduling, cost, look/feel, and so on. I hope it works out; we'll have to see." |
| #15StarFyre2007Nov 10, 2009 18:14:48 | I think look/feel is the biggest issue... they want the cartoony WoW/Eberron look instead of the darker more realistic style of Brom's works (not that allofit is realistic, but overall, the proportions, style, etc). Sanjay |

| #17theundyingNov 11, 2009 11:32:22 | I'm with Pennarin, those pictures are amazing! I'm definitely using them in my game |
| #18SysaneNov 11, 2009 13:02:00 | Whats with the second to last image link? Templar Wife of Nibenay? |
| #19PennarinNov 11, 2009 15:18:38 | Ahahaha! Close enough. |
| #20turloughNov 11, 2009 15:52:53 | Excellent pics/art! Definitely using in my game! Thanks! Also curious about the next to last picture. Any other art for the unable to draw crowd, me, to use in my game? turlough |
| #21silverwulfNov 30, 2009 9:54:55 | For me, Brom pretty much was just as integral to helping Dark Sun have it's own distinct flavor as everyone else: web.tiscalinet.it/ffantasy/Brom/Wings.jp... members.cox.net/dragons_sanctum/br_79.jp... members.cox.net/dragons_sanctum/br_78.jp... members.cox.net/dragons_sanctum/br_80.jp... members.cox.net/dragons_sanctum/Borys.jp... members.cox.net/dragons_sanctum/Part2.jp... members.cox.net/dragons_sanctum/Part4.jp... |
| #22guykaDec 01, 2009 12:11:57 | Although those pics are awesome, their wear is unsuitable for the athasian heat, too bad.
|
| #23PennarinDec 01, 2009 12:27:43 | It's fantasy. Anything realistic would match Earth cultures too closely and no longer inspire you to travel to Athas, but rather to listen to a National Geographic show. |
| #24guykaDec 02, 2009 3:59:27 | "Its' fantasy" is a poor excuse, with that rational you shouldn't track dehydration, because "it's fantasy"... The artist chose for some reason to dress the figures in ancient north-europe style which doesn't fit any arid culture. The minimal wear in Brom's pic was unique and didn't match Earth cultures (desert cultures on Earth tend to dress in long and light wear rather than no-wear) but was rational. Those figures dress for the next ice age. Don't get me wrong, the art is really awesome, but the dressing is too much similar to the traditional sword&sorccerry. |
| #25PennarinDec 02, 2009 12:59:12 | If being covered neck to feet is a staple of standard sword & sorcery for you, then our respective definitions of the genre are substantially different. I don't much care either way. I like his choice of clothing, that's all. |
| #26phoenix_mDec 03, 2009 13:20:00 | Guys keep in mind that each city-state has it's own cultural flavor. Nibenay for example: nudity is a sign of status, where as Draj feathers is the norm or Balic where they wear chitons and light togas. |

a bunch of those images aren't working for me, particularly the .cz ones... anyone else have this problem? (and did anyone happen to save them?) |
| #28jimsmaherMar 21, 2010 23:23:03 | Brom DM screen! |

Nice. I have trouble seperating Dark Sun from Brom, who is awesome (I especially like Brom's Elric). But that is some fine fantasy art none the less. |
