Oronis aka Kallis (?)

Jun 03, 2011 17:00:24 I believe that was his original name as a champion. Kallis the Lizard man slayer. Has anyone used the first Avangion on Athas or his hidden city in their 4e campaign? If so, any information you may have on how you handled him in your story line would be greatly appreciated. I cannot find any information on this that has been converted to 4e.

Jun 03, 2011 17:15:56 Brax's excellent write-up Widom on the Drylanders is about the only resource out there I know of that details Kurn and it's people, mostly told through the words of Kurnish spies.

Either they'll go the King Kaius route where he's a force for the greater good but he's capable of some heinous **** and harsh decisions which he completely justifies with "Needs to happen to prevent Hamanu from killing us, I have the only happy city in the world, and it's the world not me." Or they'll make him kind of an Ivory Tower-Elminster type where he could fix everything but would rather let the PCs do it because something good is on TV and he's completely oblivious/indifferent to the suffering outside his walls. I dunno, what do people think, will Oronis be the fascist Red Son or Yoda unable or unwilling to help the world beyond his small corner of it?

Jun 03, 2011 19:55:04 I could see a lot of gaming groups using Orinis as the bland Good-Guy Ruler who enlists the heroic PCs to do good things to help restore Athas and crap out butterflies and puke rainbows.

I much prefer to see him as just as ruthless in his actions as any other SK, but with goals that either benefit the majority or have the greatest net beneficial outcome. Our campaigns never brought the group to Kurn, so we never got to extrapolate on any of our ideas for the former Champion. We had some ideas of starting him off handing out assassination contracts to the players starting with killing some templars and corrupted nobles in Raam, then moving on to targets that were simple village peasants and even children to destabilize an area and create an uprising amongst the populace that would try and overthrow Abalach-re. If the PCs refused, he was to turn on them for not sharing in his vision of reshaping Athas for the better. The idea was never fleshed out much more than that, but needless to say that we were never fond of the idea of a one dimensional good guy king just chillin and being nice. He had a plan to restore Athas, and that plan had a very high price to pay. In a way, he was going to be not all that dissimilar from Rajaat.

Ahh yes, Keltis. I knew I didn't have it quite right. Thanks. I do like the idea that, despite his reformation, he is no less the extremist. What races made up Kurn? He wasn't a purist - not that I remember was he?

The previous editions information on Oronis have him give up the position as king, other than as a figure head to fool the other sorcerer-kings. Kurn uses a form of democracy run by a Presider and a council called the Tribunal. Oronis is more concerned with his project of restoring the valley back to the green age, and acts only as a advisor to the council. That being said, the government of Kurn has instituted a lot of paranoid restrictions to keep their secret from getting out.

I think having Oronis as no less an extremist is completely going against the spirit of the reason Oronis was added to the Dark Sun universe. The whole point is he has changed his ways and is trying to atone for what he has done.
