I have a new player to both role playing and Dark Sun in general who likes the idea of playing a Templar.

I have the group starting off with the Freedom adventure ending in the death of Kalak.  In this adventure he has been captured by slavers and sold/traded to Tyr to work on the Ziggurat.

What Sorcerer King or Queen would be the best choice for the PC to be a Templar of?  Consider flexibility for adventuring, not needing to answer to the Templar hierarchy every time he makes a decision would be nice.

They do not have to stay tied to a sorcerer-king unless they wish to.  They could be rogue.  If they do wish to stay tied to one, though, there are any number of reasons that templars would be in other cities.  Spying is a big one.  There could be a number of templars sent out just to see what is going on in other cities.  Searching out treasure for their kings (who better than adventurers for finding treasure?).  They could be hunting criminals.  Lots of ideas.

Given the time frame you're setting the game in, Urik wouldn't be a bad idea.

A templar of Lalali-Puy could have the appearance of being nature-friendly.  They aren't nearly so busy as the other templars, but are trained to be harsh in judgement when they are called... so they don't have to be.  The fact that they seem to have a lot of free time suggests that one could leave the crecent forest without too much hassle.

A templar of Ablach-Re would be a bit more clerical in nature, considering they are more like priests to Ablach-Re's false god.  A player templar could be a sort of missionary, spreading the word of Badna.  In fact it doesn't even matter if the Templar believes in Badna at all.  He could be using his "mission" as an excuse to get out of Raam.
