I know we have only just had Dark Sun announced as being converted to 4E and it will be a year before we see it, but already I have the cogs turning in my mind, planning for the first session.

None of my group have experienced Dark Sun before, so it will fall to me to introduce it to them through the game. The idea of the first session will to be show just how brutal, merciless and unforgiving the world is.

Of course, until we actually get to see the rules, creatures, etc, these are just initial ideas.

Overhead the dark sun looms, scorching the barren wastes around, from horizon to horizon a windswept vista of broken rock and sand and dust. You stagger on, one step at a time, with little thought beyond the next step. Your skin is scourged by sun and sand and slaver's lash.

You have lost count of the days since the slavers took you, an endless blur of will-sapping marching in the blazing heat, with precious little rest and even less to drink. You can only hope that the journey is soon at an end, for your strength will not hold out much longer.

The party will start out bloodied, with no healing surges, encounter or daily powers, no gear and bound together, with no chance at escape. They are guarded by crodlu-riding mercenaries.

During the march the salve caravan will be attacked and the party left abandoned in the waste with precious few supplies at hand. Their first challenge is to reach somewhere of relative 'safety', but the water at hand is hardly sufficient to supply both themselves and the other abandoned slaves. Do they kill the others for the water, simply abandon them or risk all of them suffering death by dehydration...

I am stealing this. I can't think of a better way to showcase what DarkSun is about in such a short amount of time.

That sounds a whole lot like the intro adventure "A Little Knowledge" from the original boxed set.

Man that was fun!

Wow, i thought it sounded vaguely familiar, but i wasn't sure. I never got to play any of the modules in the boxed set, as the DS campaign i joined was already an established plotline. I did read through them though, but feels like ages ago.

It's been many, many years since I read the original boxed set - mine went missing somewhere along the way

I must have subconsciously remembered some of it though, if those ideas were close to it.

I've got my own spin on this one to get my players familiar with this setting. I to will be introducing players that have never experienced the brutality of this realm. From what they're saying the setting will be following the original boxed set so what I plan to do is advance it by one year after the fall of Kalak.

The PC's will be slaves much to the description of what you gave except they're slaves in the City-State of Urik. Bloodied, no encounter or daily powers etc. No hope except for a rumored "free" City-State of Tyr. Do the PC's risk escape from their captives only to have a near hopeless chance of surviving a trek to this rumored free city? On their way they'll have to somehow manage to find enough water for a several week trip. They'll have to avoid marauding Elves, packs of hungry Thri-Kreen, Kirre and carnivorous plants. Can the PC's make it to Tyr, or will they end up like so many others as bleached bones under the heat of the Dark Sun.

I absolutely can not wait for this.

I am not familiar with the setting at all but these descriptions certainly entice me, this might be the first setting I purchase if there is more of this.
