So far the one that has told me about their character is playing an Ardent from Dark Sun, whose backstory is that he was recently jailed in Tyr for being a revolutionary - he believes that Tithian and the rest of the old guard should be swept out, and that the rest of the Sorcerer-Kings should die too to end their Tyranny.
So, given that the most anyone else has gotten me is, "my character's going to be from Eberron", needless to say that the majority of my thinking so far has centered around what looks like will be an inevitable conflict with the Sorcerer-Kings. Given that the party is going to stick out like a sore thumb during their first adventure on Athas, it won't take long afterward for the Sorcerer-Kings to realize that the planar barrier isolating Athas is gone.
So, knowing that, would any of them attempt to abandon their dying planet for the greener pastures of Faerun, Eberron, or what seems most likely to me, the Points of Light setting (given the relative power vacuum)?
Further, given their hatred for each other, is there any threat short of Rajaat that could convince them to work together, such as a party of adventurers picking them off one by one?
Finally, I thought of what might be an interesting situation, but I don't know whether it's out of character or not. I was thinking that one of the Sorcerer-Kings could find their way to Sigil - perhaps Tectuktitlay, since he's the most dogmatic about his divinity - and, figuring that it would make a good stepping stone to further conquest, attempts to muscle in a base there. Probably the most interesting picture I have in my mind is him with a contingent of templars and other relatively powerful lackeys marching along the streets in a brazen attempt to take over; and as people flee from the scene, he believes that they're running from him, when in fact he's caught the attention of the woman floating down the street towards him. |

But he just plans to learn what he can so he can return to Athas with more power. I would image most of the other sorcerer-kings would do the same. Thought one or two may abandoned Athas for greener pastures. Even if they did I would image they would still try to maintain a power base on Athas.
The sorcerer-kings find working together difficult. Only when the threat is great do they seem capable of doing so. Stopping Dregoth from becoming a dragon, stopping Kalid-Ma's rampage, trying to stop Tithina from releasing Rajaat, banning together against Dregoth when he comes back.
Not sure what would happen if one of them went to Sigil. Since they would lack any knowledge of the place, I would image they would get in trouble with the Lady of Pain very quickly and be mazed along with all of their followers. Could be an interesting adventure to free the trapped sorcerer-king if he was needed back on Athas. |
