Just post something - a piece of artwork, a photograph, a quotation, a short passage from a book, a poem, the lyrics of a song, whatever... - that makes you think "Dark Sun". The only rule is it has to be something that was not originally intended to evoke Dark Sun (so nothing from the Prism Pentad, and no official Dark Sun artwork). Here's your starter for ten: The leaves tell of the flower's death of the hours spent in this graveyard no one tending to its pain no one tending to its shame Your eyes tell of a star's death its house drained of old memories of night holding within its claim the light pending to pay its debt - "From Heaven to Dust" by Azam Ali Does it sound like a poetic description of a defiler to anyone else, or am I just weird? (Don't answer that one.) Dead plants left in his wake... spending long hours in abandoned places like graveyards... bringing pain and shame to living things... the evil of what he is reflected in his eyes... Athas' own star/sun 'drained' to death... an awful debt that the whole world must one day pay... |

It has five salt valleys outside the city (rocky badlands/salt flats) and the city itself is windswept and devoid of any plantlife outdoors. Needless to say I broke out the DS: Creature Catalog for a few nasties. |
| #3DoctorNecroticAug 01, 2012 23:42:05 | Well, post-apocalyptic fantasy in general speaks some level of Dark Sun. The first movie that pops into my head, "Ralph Bakshi's WIZARDS". Sure it's cheesy, but that's part of its charm. Also, the John Carter books are totally Dark Sun to me, though this probably served as a prime inspiration... that and Mad Max ;) |
| #4Plaguescarred1Aug 02, 2012 0:11:57 | The movie Conan The Barbarian 2011 made me think Dark Sun |
| #5DoctorNecroticAug 02, 2012 0:18:23 | The movie Conan The Barbarian 2011 made me think Dark Sun I didn't really see it. I kinda saw it in the original Conan movie with Ahnold. Perhaps more so in the original Robert E. Howard stories. But, with Howard, I feel he could see our world going back to a Conan-esque world if society crumbles... So, a bit Dark Sun indeed! |
| #6OskarOisinsonAug 03, 2012 1:45:19 | Conan, Red Sonja, John Carter, other sword and sorcery, Dune, The Weathering Continent, sword and sandal films, Vampire Hunter D, Desert Punk, Lawrence of Arabia, Tatooine, for me personally, all the desert stuff in old Final Fantasy games as well, Ralph Bakshi, etc. |
| #7squidfurAug 15, 2012 2:26:32 | Anything to do with Dune The Barsoom novels (and the movie John Carter) Gladiator The Scorpion King movies (sadly) A track off of the Last Temptation of Christ soundtrack (probably the weirdest one on there - makes me think of belgoi for some reason) Part of the soundtrack for Passion of the Christ ...and the soundtrack to Gladiator, for that matter To some degree Kingdom of Heaven and Troy (oh, definately the big hulking mul of a guy that Achiles kills in the opening sequence) Strangely, the movie Waterworld and a cinematic from the video game Lost Planet (yeah, i know...its in the snow - a complete opposite - but the big climatic battle and huge mutant monster creatures busting up out o' the ground have always made me think of Dark Sun) The Mad Max movies Parts of the series Rome The series Sparticus (though I haven't actually seen any of it) The comic book Wasteland Various aspects of the Star Wars universe My back yard (heehee....we've been having a lot of dust storms lately, and we have cacti and a crap-load of lizards) Parts of Chronicles of Riddick (especially the "air priest" lady), and maybe Pitch Black, a little A lot of Frank Frazetta's art Obviously, most of Brom's art (even a lot of his non-DS stuff) The movie Apocalypto is Draj. The actor Ron Moss is Agis of Asticles. He even started to go gray with the same little shocks of grey on the side (not quite sure how I even know about this guy, as he is/was?? a soap actor, but whatever...). I'm sure more will come to mind later... Indeed some has.... Avatar the Last Airbender (the cartoon series, not the piece of s' live action movie) makes me think of Athasian elemental clerics. The movie Starship Troopers makes me think of the kreen. |
| #8DuskweaverAug 17, 2012 8:48:52 | The Scorpion King movies (sadly) I have a guilty little secret. Two of the characters in my Dark Sun fiction were inspired by Kelly Hu's character in the first Scorpion King movie... |
| #9OneWeirdCatAug 17, 2012 13:13:11 | Not to have this devolve into a Conan debate, but why on Earth did the "re-imagine" the new Conan movie! I never thought the original would shine so brightly, but it really does a fantastic job out of all the sword and low sorcery genre. Yes, Conan in all his incarnations, with less iron of course. I second Apacoypto is Draj, totally thought that when I was watching. My cactus that I bought all those years ago when Dark Sun first came out, and still have! She, of course it is a she, has not grown so much, but seems healthy! |
| #10DontEatRawHagisAug 17, 2012 22:13:19 | Everytime I sit at my computer and realize I had to give my party to another DM. Dark Sun is a hard campaign setting to sell to players, especially new ones. I introduced Dark Sun to 3 newbies and they came out like champs. I left the campaign/party in the hands of the newest player though. Hopefully they stay together. Next month is their first session. |
