#1 cretaross Aug 26, 2010 19:25:53	I'm a pretty big fan of minis and I'm just wondering what everyone else has been using for minis for any of their Dark Sun games. I've been using Kobolds for Silt Runners, and I plan on using some Orcs/Hobgoblins for Tareks. The PC figurines were fairly simple, we even had a tiefling gladiator for the tiefling gladiator. No idea what I'll use when the party starts fighting some uniquely Athasian creatures though. Frankly I just wish I had the Creature Catalog so i could see what most of these baddies are suppose to look like rather than guess off of some bits of text here and there (Curse you Amazon!).
#2 errvalunia Aug 26, 2010 20:05:58	Get the creature's catalog--if you go into a preferred game store they have them already. We bought ours like last Friday when we went in to get the DS campaign book. If you're DDI they have all the art available from all the books, so our DM made counters on card stock using the art from the books. We use paper counters because we just can't afford hundreds of dollars worth of minis
#3 morskittar Aug 26, 2010 21:29:03	I've been gathering miniatures with as much multipurpose Dark Sun use as possible.  Basically insects and quadrupedal llizards of small, medium, and large size (there's a ton of these in various sets- most a dollar or two on eBay, no more than five each) and non-armored humanoids (wood elves, barbarians, primal classes).  A few Hook Horrors (for large monstrous bipeds), a Goristro or two (beasthead giants!), and a Rehmoraz (huge centipede!) and I can represent the most common stuff pretty easily. Gith, I think, are the hardest; there really aren't any gangly, vaguely reptilian humanoids that I've found.
#4 el_ahrairah Aug 27, 2010 0:06:23	Good call on the Kobolds for Silt Runners, I think they are descendants anyhow. This came up in another thread, but for Gith I've used Crucians, if only for their shells resembling mekillot armor, hunched pose, and beast-like legs. Another user here, (sorry, can't remember name) suggested Geonosian Drones from Star Wars, which I think works really well, and I picked up a small lot for that purpose. Edit: I have some Giant Celestial Beetles for Kanks.
#5 jahatch28 Aug 29, 2010 14:40:15	Not sure if you are limiting yourself to D&D & WOTC minis, but there are some good metal and plastic minis out there (unfortunately usualy more expensive).... there is a mini game called Dark Age that is actually based on Brom's artwork and hence has suitable models for a lot of PCs and monstrous humanoids ... I've used plastic Tyranids from GW, there was a game for Starship Troopers that had plastic models for a ton of different plastic bugs (made by Mongoose Games I believe) that would work, and other than that, I think some liberal borrowing of plastic dinosaur and insect toys from the kids section of toy stores and "science" stores also works well.  Ebay and various online retailors are good sources for some of the OOP stuff and hard to find stuff (like Dark Age and Starship Troopers). I tend to try to find PC models as close to what I want to see as possible, then be a lot more liberal with monsters ... but it is hard to find a lot of suitable PCs for half-giants/goliaths, thri-kreen, and bald dwarves (and to a certain extent muls).... but hey, that's what imaginations are for, right? - Josh

I often find myself forgetting this, and that ultimately its storytelling and player imagination that sculpts the mini. I'm just so much of a mini junky, I try to get the best proxy I can, or if it's a mod/repaint project I feel up to or have time for, then I'll take that route.
#7 jahatch28 Aug 29, 2010 21:07:10	My goal is to usually repaint or track down or convert one or two key models for a nights adventure if I don't have anything suitable.. usually I can use the assortment of models I have (spanning a good two decades of miniature wargames helps), but if I have a unique or rare monster or NPC I want to make an impressive entrance into the game then I'll try to track it down... but honestly, I don't know if my players really would complain if I didn't.. they do like seeing new stuff and I personally like the satisfaction of surprising them, but on nights when I don't plan that far ahead or can't find what I want, they don't complain at all.. so.. I guess I was right, imagination for for the win (when all else and ebay fails)... =p
