About half way through the Crinson Legion, Rikus ends up on those ruins where he faces Umbra. There he meets some undead/ghost/revenants, and one of them ends up embeded on a gem on his chest. Who/What are those?

Search within TSR's Dark Sun Monstrous Compendium 2 or inside Athas.org's Terrors of the Dead Lands for the entry on the Athasian Wraith.

They are spirits from the Gray that are immune to the dissolution the plane brings, for their dedication to a cause greater than their own lives sustains them. They usually come with a phylactery of some kind - a gem in the novel - that contains their life energy...albeit that may be a cheap interpretation on the part of the TSR staff who adapted the Prism Pentad wraiths to paper, for in the novel they tell Rikus that the gems contain their life energy so as to ensure their loyalty, for that way one day they may be brought back to life.

These particular wraiths were lieutenants of a powerful warlord of ages past. They await his return, and protect what remains of their ancient tasks.
