| #1phoenix_mSep 19, 2008 17:57:46 | So is nobody talking about 3rd edition any longer, just wondering really. |
| #2jaanos1Sep 19, 2008 21:27:23 | no way! I'm still interested in 3.0 / 3.5, in fact, NO interest in 4.0 at all! :D |
| #3KamelionSep 20, 2008 9:16:50 | Same here - 4e didn't catch my interest and I'm staying with 3e. Well, Pathfinder, actually. We made characters a couple of nights ago for a new series of games set in Nibenay, set three years after Kalak's death (Year of Dragon's Agitation). My main efforts (as far as system goes) have been making the DS3e rules match the changes that came with Pathfinder. When it's all settled, I'm planning to start a thread detailing what I've done. I reckon that if those of us who are staying with 3e want to keep discussion on that edition alive, we're going to have to do so ourselves ![]() |
| #4Arawn76Sep 20, 2008 9:51:14 | Absolutely no way!! I'm a 4E player and the thought of losing you guys is mortifying. From a purely selfish point of view the more guys here the more chance I have of seeing these "other published world" as 4E world. More importantly differing views offer far more to me than everyone singing from the same crib sheet. EVEN more importantly, editions mean crap when it comes to sharing setting lore and nothing stops us contributing to each others threads. |
| #5taurrenSep 20, 2008 10:18:27 | I also remain a big fan of 3.?E, but have found the WotC boards to be less than welcoming. There are many other sites which continue to have a solid amount activity, support and most of all an appreciation of the earlier editions (3E, AD&D etc). I spend the majority of my "gaming community" time over there. |
| #6KamelionSep 20, 2008 11:58:57 | Absolutely no way!! Well said ![]() It is the nature of gaming that a new edition will bring a large number of mechanics-focused threads (someone should run a sweepstake on how many versions of defiling rules and gladiator variants we'll see each week ;)...) Eventually these things stabilise and more edition-neutral discussions will resurface. It's also a shame that this change in editions was accompanied by the merger of the Other Worlds forums into a single board. Even though we're back to separate subforums now, the damage has been done to one degree or another, and many posters have gone elsewhere. It'll be interesting to see if folks start to migrate back from athas.org's Arena, or if the return of the subforums here has come too late. A shame, either way, as this was at one time a hugely vibrant DS community with a great, friendly vibe. |

| #8ZardnaarSep 21, 2008 7:15:50 | Played 4th ed and thought it was good if a little bland. Liked 3.5 but it got dumb around level 11+ Epic level play was really stupid. Win initiative and cast timestop. Played the Pathfinder beta a bit which is trying to fix a few problems 3.5 had. Ordered a copy of the 4-00 page Pathfinder from Paizo, and getting an extra couple printed. 1200 pages of Pathfinder. Wish I could get the Pathfinder chronicles but as a non US person would be really expensive to get them shiped over. I think we will go with a Pathfinder/3.5 hybrid or maybe switch over to 4th ed once a few more splatbooks come out for it. My old Darksun group of 5 has dwindled to 3 and 4th ed is very team based and seems to work best with a 4 or 5 person party. Overall I think I would rather play 3.5 but DM 4th ed. Parts of 4th ed are brilliant, other parts suck. |

Ordered a copy of the 4-00 page Pathfinder from Paizo, and getting an extra couple printed. 1200 pages of Pathfinder. Note the following is opinion not fact and I a state it as such: I just don't like PFRPG, in my opinion it fails to do three things; Wish I could get the Pathfinder chronicles but as a non US person would be really expensive to get them shiped over. I've found that most games stores stock them, if not you should be able to find them on a local internet store. BUY THEM!! You will not find IMHO a better written RPG product, at least for fluff. Whatever edition you end up playing it is worth the time, effort and money to pick up and convert these adventures. I think we will go with a Pathfinder/3.5 hybrid or maybe switch over to 4th ed once a few more splatbooks come out for it. My old Darksun group of 5 has dwindled to 3 and 4th ed is very team based and seems to work best with a 4 or 5 person party. I think once we have an actual set of 4E DS books and some suitable splats (psionics please ) people are going to be blown away! My favourite setting is in my sig (please come and discuss with me any time ;) ), but I'm unbiased enough to say I thought Darksun the most original and innovative. Planescape and Spelljammer fell back on to many Greyhawk/FR themes for me.And as a side note you can easily adjust encounters for smaller groups. If you go 4th and ever feel you need a helping hand feel free to ask. |
| #10ZardnaarSep 21, 2008 14:28:12 | To be hnest it wouldn't bother me if Pathfinder ditched the backwards compatability thing.. If they're keeping save or dies etc they should just make saves better across the board and everyone gets +1 on all saves every 2 levels. A fighter for example gets +12/+10/+10 base saves at level 20. I wanted 4th ed to be an evolution of 3.5 not a revolution. Wanted fantasy D&D saga editon, got 4th Ed the Tactical Minis Game with RPG elelments. |
| #11jonplaywuSep 22, 2008 14:18:04 | And not even a very good tactical game, I agree. I love dnd, but this iteration is meant for retards with no imagination who require minis to play. I'm a convert over to 4e, I enjoy playing the game, but I have yet to see the dynamic storytelling available in the freeform rpg that was my 3rd editing games in this iteration. Still, I'm having fun painting more minis, so really the only thing I have to complain about is the fact that during combat I'm restricted to a set sequence. Not all that bad realy, its just a game after all. |
| #12jaanos1Sep 22, 2008 17:39:07 | My group is currently grappling with how much the epic rules in 3.5 suck... have been thinking of turning over to an elf-quest styled system where you have a base percentage for each skill based on attribute modifier, plus ranks, so for example Knowledge: Planes would be: [INT modifier x character level] + Ranks. So with most characters you'll get a score somewhere between, say 40 and 160 or so. Then every situation has a modifier - usually negative, but sometimes positive, and you have to beat (i.e roll under) that percentage. 01 is always a failure, and 100 is always a success, however. Routine tasks have a big fat modifier (so that relatively low-level characters would normally succeed) whilst truly epic things - like shooting an arrow in a howling cyclone-spawned storm at a flying target 400 feet away might be something like -150 to your roll. So even if you had an archery skill of 160, you'd need to roll under 10 on a d100 to succeed! Elf-Quest also had rules for criticals etc but i can't remember them off hand. So yeah, once (if) the current group get to epic, i was thinking that is a really easy way of doing things. So i'm going to check it out, see if it works with minimal changes to rest of system. |
| #13jaanos1Sep 22, 2008 18:18:46 | Hey Zardnaar - did you get any of this stuff? if so can you post a pic of it? New Zealanders pillage cheese, or vomit September 23, 2008 A LARGE chunk of something unpleasant has washed up on a New Zeland beach, and the locals are excited. Some say the "disgusting" squarish white block, the size of a 44-gallon drum, is cheese - possibly brie, while others believe it is ambergris, or whale vomit. And that has solved the problem for council workers who were wondering how to remove the 500kg mystery object that washed up on a beach in Wellington. The lump washed up at Breaker Bay at the weekend and once word got out that it could be valuable ambergris - an excretion from whales that is used to make perfume - locals pillaged it, the New Zealand Press Associationr reported. Ambergris can sell for thousands of dollars per kilogram and Wellington City Council spokesman Richard MacLean said it was like "some sort of bizarre gold rush" on the beach yesterday. "We went out there this morning and there were people sort of lunging at it with spades and sharp implements trying to chop pieces off so they could make off with it and make their fortunes," he said. "Whether people are now going to try and pass it off on TradeMe as highly valuable ambergris remains to be seen." But because the lump was a regular shape, the general consensus is that it islard or cooking fat. Initial suggestions were that it might be a huge lump of cheese which had fallen off a boat, but either way, Mr MacLean said it was foul. "It's disgusting. I've got a piece of it beside my desk and everyone in the office is pretty much grossed out by it." He said there was probably no need to get it tested unless issues arose around people attempting to sell it. |
| #14ZardnaarSep 22, 2008 23:55:46 | Hey Zardnaar - did you get any of this stuff? if so can you post a pic of it? No but its ben on the news. Kind of a joke over here. Epic rules really suck. As much as I like 3.5 the game started to fall apart around level 11 or so let alone level 30. Strange thing though Fighters get half decent again in the epic levels- go figure. Epic monsters have to many hit pooints, to high saves and to much resistence if not outright immunity for spellcasters to deal with them. The Collussus with an Antimagic Shell is a good example. Epic spellcasting feat sucked the big one as well. |
| #15jaanos1Sep 23, 2008 1:17:07 | Do you know anything about these 'pathfinder' rules i keep hearing about? If they are half decent, might be worth looking into instead of re-inventing the wheel with a d100 version of Darksun |

| #17Duke5150Sep 23, 2008 6:55:16 | I for one am still a 3.5 player/dm so I use/want all the DS info and rules I can get! Come on athas.org, you know you wanna finish up all those 3.5 projects for us! (cough, cough, deadlands, cough, cough.):P |
| #18GrummoreSep 24, 2008 11:28:53 | I'm 3.5 and I'll stay 3.5. Thanks! (just opened my grave to remove the dust over it. I'm still glad to be around here!) |
| #19dawnstealerSep 24, 2008 12:44:30 | I went back to 2e. So much better. |

| #21jon_oracle_of_athasSep 24, 2008 17:14:02 | Duke, we are working on the final revision of DS 3.5. If you head on over to the athas.org site, you´ll see that we are doing a chapter-by-chapter release. As for Secrets of the Dead Lands, we are considering a version neutral release. It has yet to be discussed some more internally. |
