May 15, 2010 2:22:38 Old news, I know, but I'm at episode 10 and it is so very Athasian! The stylized combat, the decor, the colors, the light; it feels like the Tyrian Pits! A lot more than HBO's Rome ever felt.

Voice your opinion of the show, and whether you feel it is Athasian enough to your taste!

Very much an inspiration for parts of my upcoming game.

May 15, 2010 15:55:35 I caught the first...7 episodes before my family changed their cable plan and we lost Stars...but yes it is definitly a good place to get the feel for gladiators in DS. I am guessing I will probably have to buy it when season 1 comes out on DVD.

May 21, 2010 18:37:23 I personally thought the show sucked my ass. Nothing about it was original, the effects were bad, throw in some **** (which don't get me wrong, I love them ****) and you have a big bowl of suck. Nothing Athasian about that show at all.

This is of course, my opinion.

Jun 02, 2010 20:16:11 I expected the series to feel like '300' and it did; so, it wasn't bad and it's better than I hoped. I'm not always a fan of 'historical' dramas but I did enjoy Deadwood and now Spartacus.

Hope it shows up on DVD/Blu ray (it should, right?). Gonna watch it again to help inspire my Dark Sun 4e games ;).

Blood and breasts yeah; the soft-core porn stuff was stupid and all the white actors playing Romans was kind of lame, but who's going to watch a historically authentic show? And everyone in that show was at one time affiliated with the show, Xena: Warrior Princess.

I didn't like the first episode, but in time, I grew to like it; I'd wonder which Roman is going to stab another Roman in the back for a bag of coins.

Watching it improved the way I would run a Gladiator game; there's more to being a Gladiator than the arena.

That, and I read Dark Sun's Gladiator Book...

Jun 03, 2010 0:40:24 you watch Spartacus to get an idea of how a slave base is run by their owners, and how a gladiator training house (ludus) is run and what it does behind the scenes, and what it is to be its master (lanista). The terms may be different on Athas, yet the details are nearly all the same.

As for the backstabbing between the rich and famous, that I believe can be found wholesale in any Athasian city-state's noble/templar district.
