Another little templar based PrC for you all to chew over.

Thanks again to Kam for his use of the magic editing wand. :D

The Templar Infiltrator

"I need to know what Senior Templar Jai’tal is up to. If we can discover how she plans to execute Nibenay’s plans, maybe we can beat her to the punch. Now go !"
- Tecliz of House Stel to Mekram, Templar Infiltrator.

A templar infiltrator is skilled in the art of spying. He may be in the paid employ of a person or organisation or may infiltrate the city’s temperate for his own motives, both malevolent and benign.
Passing himself off as a templar, the infiltrator is free to move through a city with more freedom that even a noble might enjoy. As he advances in levels, greater spying skills come into play and his is able to steal information more effectively. At the highest levels the infiltrator gain abilities enabling him to evade many forms of capture.

Contacting a templar infiltrator can be a tricky business as they always hide their identities with much zeal. They can, and frequently do, make extensive use of their disguise skill to appear as completely different people over a period of time when weighing up a client. It is not uncommon for an infiltrator to have developed three or four different personas in different city-states, that can be returned to, when the need arises.

As with many professions, the infiltrators life is not with risk. Should he be discovered, masquerading as a templar, the penalties would be as harsh as they would be swift.

Infiltrators can be of any race that act as templars within their target city. It is usual for the city’s sorcerer-king to choose the races that he wishes to represent him. Humans are common. Other races such as half-elves, mul, and dwarves are more uncommon, with pureblood elves being the rarest of templars. Any other race is almost unheard of.

Most of the time, infiltrators tend to be quiet and reclusive, preferring to blend into the background. On occasion, however, they take a more direct approach and rely on their charisma to bluff their way through to a final goal.

Their unique abilities make them incredibly valuable allies to an individual, group or organization wishing to strike against the rule of another city-state or gain valuable information that bribery or blackmail alone, may not provide.
It is not unknown for one sorcerer-king to use a good infiltrator against another sorcerer-king.
Although it is usual to find them undercover within a city-state, they can occasionally be found outside one of the major cities, usually completing specific missions.

Class features
All of the following are class features of the renegade templar prestige class.

Weapon and Armour Proficiencies: Templar infiltrators gain no proficiency with any weapon or armour.

Mimic Templar (Ex): As a result of the templar infiltrator’s training he can pass as a templar from a city-state of his choosing of a level equal to his character level. He is treated as having the Secular Authority class feature, if he does not already possess it. If he does possess the Secular Authority class feature, his levels in templar infiltrator stack with his other character levels for the purposes of that ability. In either case, the character can use Secular Authority in city-states other than his own, as if he were a templar of that city-state. This ability does not foil magical effects that would reveal the character’s true identity or affiliation, but for all mundane intents and purposes, the character is treated as being a templar of the city-state of his choice. The character can fashion a fake sigil, which has no link to any sorcerer-monarch, but still enables him to use the Secular Authority ability.

Mask Thoughts: At 2nd level, the renegade templar has learned to hide his surface thoughts and gains a +4 bonus to Will saves to resist effects that would read his thoughts.

Clairaudience (Sp): At 4th level, the templar infiltrator gains the ability to listen to conversations in distant places with clairaudience, as per the 3rd-level wizard spell of the same name, once per day plus one additional use per day for every point of Charisma bonus.

Clairvoyance (Sp): At 6th level, the templar infiltrator gains the ability to view distant places with clairvoyance, as per the 3rd-level wizard spell of the same name, once per day plus one additional use per day for every point of Charisma bonus.

Allies: The templar infiltrator gains the favor of an organization, tribe, planar creature or a powerful individual. The frequency and extent of favors he may call upon will vary (for example, spending the night under the protected tents of an elven tribe is a small favor, while asking for a caravan raid in which several tribe members will perish is a large favor). The DM determines how often the templar infiltrator can call upon his allies for aid without losing their favor. The maximum monetary value of the favor cannot exceed 1,000 Cp.

Word of Recall (Sp): At 10th level, the templar infiltrator can escape any situation as long as he can utter a single word. This effect is identical to the 6th-level cleric spell of the same name. It is useable 3 times per day.

Spells: Beginning at 1st level and at every level after that, the templar infiltrator gains new spells per level according to the table above.

One big thing missing is where does this PrC get its magical effects like word of recall? What source is granting them? (I might be wrong on this, but I think the athasian PrCs in Jon's document do not confer magical abilities unless you already are a spellcaster...and concerning that keep on reading below.)

There's a prerequisite of spellcaster...of what type? Divine, arcane, or both?
Why would this PrC require you to be a spellcaster in the first place? Sounds like it should be material for a rogue...
Do you really need to gain spell-like abilties, couldn't the PrC offer similar results without using supernatural means?

The PrC does have a spellcasting requirement.

It could be either.

If you are going to impersonate a templar I just figured that you might have to cast the odd spell to keep up the disguise. I know that spell casting amongst templars is a varied practice - some more some less.

Do you really need to gain spell-like abilties, couldn't the PrC offer similar results without using supernatural means?

Certainly, I guess I just opted to go down the spellcaster route. ;)

The "word of recall" power I put in as kinda like an emergency "get out" ability. Cover's blown, imminent threat of death etc.
