Hey Guys,

One of my players gets to pick a terrainwalk  power and wants one that covers sand, would that be earthwalk? or should I just make up a new sandwalk power?

Cheers,

Daniel.

I'm guessing that would be Desertwalk.

None of the official walks seem to cover sand but yeah Desert walk is a good name,

Terrain Walk

The monster ignores difficult terrain in encounter areas where the stated environment predominates.

Earth Walk: The creature ignores difficult terrain if that terrain is the result of rubble, uneven stone, or earth.

Forest Walk: The creature ignores difficult terrain if that terrain is the result of trees, underbrush, plants, or natural growth.

Ice Walk: The creature ignores difficult terrain if that terrain is the result of ice or snow.

Swamp Walk: The creature ignores difficult terrain if that terrain is the result of bog, mud, or shallow water.

Being from Arizona I LOVED that Dark Sun had different terrain types other than Desert.  The desert is a vast an beautiful place with many different types of land that each are as different as Mountain and Forest.

The Athasian terrain types are Boulder Field, Dust Sink, Mountain, Mudflat, Rocky Badland, Salt Flat, Salt Marsh, Sandy Waste, Scrub Plain, & Stoney Barrens, Verdant Belt, Forest

I would probably let them pick 2-3 since there are so many, or you could group them and let them pick a group.

Groups could be...:

  • Boulder Field, Rocky Badland, Stoney Barren, Boulder Field

  • Dust Sink, Mudflat, Salt Marsh

  • Salt Flat, Salt Marsh, Scrub Plain

  • Sandy Waste, Boulder Field, Rocky Badland

  • Forest, Verdant Belt, Scrub Plain

Actually, just looking at the map, have them pick three from their area.
So a Tyrian might have: Verdant Belt, Mountain, & Rocky Badland
While a Balicite would have Verdant Belt, Dust Sink, & Stoney Barren
An elven dune runner could pick any three., etc.

As far as RAW is concerned I believe it to be Earthwalk. Considering that Ssurrans are just Lizardmen with swampwalk swapped out for earthwalk.

Earthwalk is what you are looking for. Alternatively, you could introduce Sandwalk. But since silt is already covered by Earthwalk, as is the broken rocky ground of non-dune deserts, Sandwalk will cover nothing but sand, and be rather narrow.

The problem with making the ability just Earthwalk, and keeping just Earth, Forest, Swamp, and Ice is that it makes the ability much more powerful in Dark Sun than it would in another world.  If 80% of the terrain is Earth, that's a huge advantage.

That's why I advocated to using the Dark Sun specific terrain and limiting the power to one group or 3 terrain types which still makes it roughly 1/4 of the available terrain.

For monsters it doesn't really matter, since they're one time use, but for a PC it makes it too strong.

So what would be the new terrain types?

Sand walk, silt walk, rock walk?

I would just call it Terrain Walk, and you pick your three terrains as I stated above.
